{"id":54541,"date":"2015-03-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-02T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=eadebdf3c4503b82c1c96ae59e355ef9"},"modified":"2015-03-02T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2015-03-02T00:00:00","slug":"press-release-nick-clegg-announces-multi-million-pound-boost-for-cycling-in-8-major-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=54541","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Nick Clegg announces multi-million pound boost for cycling in 8 major cities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The \u00a3114 million investment will make it easier and safer for people to get on their bikes.<\/p>\n<p>Bristol, Leeds, Cambridge, Birmingham, Norwich, Newcastle and Oxford all submitted their bids for the funding, which was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/deputy-pm-announces-214-million-investment-in-cycling\">dedicated cycling summit<\/a> in November last year.<\/p>\n<p>The money will be used to help each city deliver plans to get more people cycling by improving and expanding cycle routes between the city centres, local communities and key employment and retail spots.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are in the midst of a cycling revolution in the UK but we need to make sure we\u2019re in the right gear to see it through. That\u2019s why I\u2019m so pleased to announce this investment for these major cities to make it easier for people to get around on 2 wheels.<\/p>\n<p>With the legacy of the 2012 Olympics and the Tour de France in Yorkshire last year still fresh in our minds, this money can help Britain become a cycling nation to rival the likes of Denmark and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Research shows us that boosting cycling could save\u00a0billions of pounds otherwise spent on the NHS, reduce pollution and congestion, and create a happier and safer population.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/deputy-pm-announces-214-million-investment-in-cycling\">cycling summit last year<\/a>, attended by cycling experts and businesses from across the country, the Deputy Prime Minister also announced a\u00a0\u00a3100 million investment to improve the conditions for cyclists and walkers travelling alongside and crossing Britain\u2019s most important and busiest roads \u2013 what\u2019s called the Strategic Road Network.<\/p>\n<p>This brought the total investment in cycling by this government to\u00a0\u00a3588 million by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>more than doubling funding for cycling to \u00a3374 million in 2011 to 2015 to improve cycling safety, infrastructure and availability and affordability of bikes for more people across the country  <\/li>\n<li>helping leverage an extra \u00a3248 million of local funding to deliver these programmes<\/li>\n<li>giving 8 other major UK cities (Manchester, Bristol, Cambridge, Norwich, Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle and Oxford) access to \u00a394 million of grants to help them improve their cycling infrastructure and build a reputation as modern cycling cities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0Cycling Minister Robert Goodwill said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Cycling is great for your health and good for the environment, and this government is doing all it can to help more people get out on their bikes.<\/p>\n<p>We have doubled the amount of money available for cycling and taken steps to make sure\u00a0that future governments plan properly for cycling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This investment shows our continued commitment to making cycling even easier and safer,\u00a0and our ambition to\u00a0help make these cities better for UK became a cycling nation like the Netherlands or Denmark it could:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>save the NHS \u00a317 billion within 20 years   <\/li>\n<li>reduce road deaths by 30%  <\/li>\n<li>increase
