{"id":54756,"date":"2015-03-05T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-05T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=c21ff50c13d8f4574c5c45ab61cba27e"},"modified":"2015-03-05T15:18:47","modified_gmt":"2015-03-05T15:18:47","slug":"press-release-neville-rolfe-students-must-understand-the-basics-of-intellectual-property","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=54756","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Neville-Rolfe: Students must understand the basics of intellectual property"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> Added cases studies of winners.<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/studentship-enterprise-awards-2015\">speech today<\/a> (5 March 2015), Business Minister Baroness Neville-Rolfe set out her vision that students should have a basic understanding of intellectual property (<abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr>) as a key part of building a successful, innovative future for the UK economy. <\/p>\n<p>Baroness Neville-Rolfe said \u201cevery child should leave school with a basic understanding of <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> principles\u201d and that \u201c<abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> must be an integrated part of learning from the earliest school years through primary, secondary and higher education\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The minister was speaking at the winners\u2019 ceremony for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/intellectual-property-office\">Intellectual Property Office\u2019s<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Intellectual Property Office\">IPO<\/abbr>) StudentshIP Enterprise Awards. She announced the 10 university student projects that will share \u00a3450,000 for their plans to improve understanding and exploitation of <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> through student-business partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>The winners included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aston University\u2019s Patent, <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> and Entrepreneurship Club that will run simulation companies for students to see how their decisions may turn out in the real world to help hone their commercial skills<\/li>\n<li>City University London\u2019s the Start-Ed Student Accelerator project that will be placing students with technology start-ups. The students, supervised by qualified lawyers, will learn commercial skills and support the new company in developing its approach to <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> <\/li>\n<li>Lancaster University\u2019s <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> game that will help student learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><span class=\"attachment inline\" id=\"attachment_943174\"><br \/>\n  <a href=\"\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/409685\/PN070_Case_Studies.pdf\">Case Studies: The Winners<\/a><br \/>\n  (<span class=\"type\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>, <span class=\"file-size\">132KB<\/span>, <span class=\"page-length\">4 pages<\/span>)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Baroness Neville-Rolfe also launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/intellectual-property-for-universities\">\u2018<abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> Tutor\u2019<\/a>, a new online learning tool designed to increase the level of <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> knowledge amongst lecturers and students in higher education.  <\/p>\n<p>The tool will support the use and understanding of <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> in student enterprise activities at universities.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Intellectual Property, Baroness Neville-Rolfe <abbr title=\"Dame of the British Empire\">DBE<\/abbr> said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Our economy is increasingly knowledge based, as we now invest more in ideas and knowledge than in buildings or machinery. Having an early working knowledge of intellectual property is crucial and we must foster the entrepreneurial capability of the next generation, to secure the UK\u2019s continued global competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The StudentshIP Enterprise Awards and the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/intellectual-property-for-universities\">\u2018<abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> Tutor\u2019<\/a> online tool will teach students how to best apply <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> skills within their chosen field and successfully protect the benefits of their ideas and inventions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 id=\"notes-to-editors\">Notes to Editors<\/h3>\n<p>1.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/intellectual-property-for-universities\">\u2018<abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> Tutor\u2019<\/a> is an interactive, online learning tool developed by the UK <abbr title=\"Intellectual Property Office\">IPO<\/abbr> in conjunction with representatives from higher and further education, industry and legal sectors to increase student awareness of <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr>.  <\/p>\n<p>Its aims are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>provide a tool for students and lecturers to use which will improve their awareness and understanding of <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr>\n<\/li>\n<li>provide a benchmark for <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> knowledge amongst the student and lecturing community<\/li>\n<li>increase the number of graduates entering industry with <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> knowledge<\/li>\n<li>encourage students to think about <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> created during the course of their studies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2.In 2012, a National Union of Students study, co-funded by the UK <abbr title=\"Intellectual Property Office\">IPO<\/abbr>, found that although 80% of students felt that knowledge of <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> was important to their education and future career, only 40% thought their current awareness of <abbr title=\"intellectual property\">IP<\/abbr> was enough to support them in their future career.
