{"id":55132,"date":"2015-03-12T16:29:04","date_gmt":"2015-03-12T16:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=c0f06fb8f8c14055ab3a460c6d965a77"},"modified":"2015-03-12T16:29:04","modified_gmt":"2015-03-12T16:29:04","slug":"press-release-new-ofsted-board-members-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=55132","title":{"rendered":"Press release: New Ofsted board members announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Education Secretary Nicky Morgan today (12 March 2015) confirmed the appointment of 2 new non-executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/ofsted\"><abbr title=\"Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills\">Ofsted<\/abbr><\/a> board members.<\/p>\n<p>John Hughes and James Kempton have been appointed to serve on the <abbr title=\"Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills\">Ofsted<\/abbr> board for 3 years.<\/p>\n<p>Education Secretary Nicky Morgan said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I welcome the appointment of these 2 new board members who will use their experience to further improve education in our schools.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 id=\"biography-details-of-new-board-members\">Biography details of new board members<\/h3>\n<p>John Hughes will retire as Group Political Adviser at <abbr title=\"British Petroleum\">BP<\/abbr> later this month. He also holds a number of non-executive roles. John has worked with <abbr title=\"British Petroleum\">BP<\/abbr> since 1990 in a variety of roles in Europe, Africa and North America. He also previously worked as a teacher and head of physics at a secondary school in London.<\/p>\n<p>James Kempton currently works at think tank CentreForum as Director of Social Policy and Education. A former council leader, teacher, medical royal college chief executive and management consultant, he has worked extensively on public services reform, with a particular focus on education and social mobility policy. He is chair of Islington Community Theatre, a trustee of Music First, a governor of the Cripplegate Foundation and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills\">Ofsted<\/abbr>\u2019s board is chaired by David Hoare who was appointed in July 2014. Sir Michael Wilshaw, <abbr title=\"Her Majesty's\">HM<\/abbr> Chief Inspector, Linda Farrant, Paul Snell and John Roberts are already members of the board.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"notes-to-editors\">Notes to editors<\/h2>\n<p>The appointments were agreed in accordance with the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/publicappointmentscommissioner.independent.gov.uk\/the-code-of-practice\/\">Code of Practice issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments (<abbr title=\"Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments\">OCPA<\/abbr>)<\/a> and were made on merit; political activity played no part in the decision-making process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations and the code of practice, there is a requirement for appointees\u2019 political activity (if any declared) and other information, to be made public.<\/p>\n<p>The details of the application process and job description were published online and the essential criteria were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>proven ability to work at board level with knowledge of how to add value as a non-executive &#8211; or a demonstrable ability to operate effectively at this level<\/li>\n<li>strong analytical skills<\/li>\n<li>sound understanding and experience of strategic and financial planning<\/li>\n<li>commitment to <abbr title=\"Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills\">Ofsted<\/abbr> as an inspector and regulator and <abbr title=\"Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills\">Ofsted<\/abbr>\u2019s role in improving standards in education, children\u2019s services and skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The desirable criteria were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>experience of driving and delivering change and improvements in a fast-moving environment<\/li>\n<li>experience in strategic communications and\/or complex analysis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The roles are remunerated at \u00a34,141 per annum.<\/p>\n<p>John Hughes declared no political activity.
