{"id":55985,"date":"2015-03-26T17:49:42","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T17:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=e65e5c35495526a70fc1006a96a64b84"},"modified":"2015-03-26T17:49:42","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T17:49:42","slug":"news-story-biotechnology-20-million-funding-boost-for-uk-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=55985","title":{"rendered":"News story: Biotechnology: \u00a320 million funding boost for UK projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Catalyst was set up in January 2014 to support UK researchers and companies to work together to bring their biotechnology innovations to market and to help cement the UK\u2019s position as a world leader in this sector. <\/p>\n<p>It is funded by Innovate UK, the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbsrc.ac.uk\/\">Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council<\/a> and the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.epsrc.ac.uk\/\">Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"paper-crumble-algae-seaweed-and-polyester\">Paper \u2018crumble\u2019, algae, seaweed and polyester<\/h2>\n<p>The funding will enable the winning projects to undertake feasibility studies and industrial research in a wide range of intriguing areas.<br \/>\nThe <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ifr.ac.uk\/\">Institute of Food Research<\/a> is leading a feasibility study with partners <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.palmpaper.co.uk\/en\/Company\/\">Palm Paper Ltd<\/a>, <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vireol.com\/\">Vireol Bio-Industries plc<\/a>, and <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lenzing.com\/en\/concern\/lenzing-group.html\">Lenzing<\/a> to investigate turning paper \u2018crumble\u2019 destined for the landfill into fermentable sugars. <\/p>\n<p>The Integr-algal project led by <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/algaecytes.com\/\">Algaecytes Ltd<\/a> partnered by the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/\">University of Nottingham<\/a>, is exploring using algae to make \u2018fish oil without the fish\u2019.  <\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biometechnologiesplc.com\/\">Biome Technologies<\/a> and the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.liv.ac.uk\/\">University of Liverpool<\/a> are looking at the technical and commercial feasibility of manufacturing bio-based polyester from cellulose-based compounds. <\/p>\n<p>The Sea Gas project, led by the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uk-cpi.com\/\">Centre for Process Innovation<\/a> is working on producing bio-methane fuel from seaweed by anaerobic digestion.
