{"id":58016,"date":"2015-06-17T06:43:40","date_gmt":"2015-06-17T06:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=11ac4d47a067a564c03341b06fb53b95"},"modified":"2015-06-17T06:43:40","modified_gmt":"2015-06-17T06:43:40","slug":"news-story-restricted-substances-in-electrical-and-electronic-equipment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=58016","title":{"rendered":"News story: Restricted substances in electrical and electronic equipment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The European Commission has published <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=uriserv:OJ.L_.2015.137.01.0010.01.ENG\">Commission Delegated Directive 2015\/863<\/a> which amends Annex II to <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=celex:32011L0065\">Directive 2011\/65\/EU<\/a> \u2013 the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. <\/p>\n<p>This Delegated Directive lists new substances which will be restricted for use in <abbr title=\"electrical and electronic equipment\">EEE<\/abbr>, specifically the toxic phthalates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><abbr title=\"Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate\">DEHP<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"Butyl benzyl phthalate\">BBP<\/abbr> <\/li>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"Dibutyl phthalate\">DBP<\/abbr> <\/li>\n<li><abbr title=\"Diisobutyl phthalate\">DIBP<\/abbr><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These substances have previously been classified as <abbr title=\"Substances of Very High Concern\">SVHCs<\/abbr>, considered harmful to human health, and a maximum concentration of 0.1 % by weight will be established for each of these in <abbr title=\"electrical and electronic equipment\">EEE<\/abbr>. These restrictions come into force at the end of 2016, except for medical devices (including in vitro medical devices) which came into force in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Laboratories will therefore need to be able to measure these substances accurately in <abbr title=\"electrical and electronic equipment\">EEE<\/abbr> around the 0.1 % level in order to show compliance with the Directive.  Both high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry can be used for such measurements. Experience in our laboratory has shown that often the biggest challenge in the analysis of <abbr title=\"electrical and electronic equipment\">EEE<\/abbr> is the extraction of restricted substances from plastic cabling used in <abbr title=\"electrical and electronic equipment\">EEE<\/abbr> applications. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New substances which will be restricted for use in electrical and electronic equipment following amendments to EU Directives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/58016"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=58016"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/58016\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=58016"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=58016"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=58016"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
