{"id":58627,"date":"2015-07-01T11:07:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-01T11:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=235d61eba8ea3c2eb071a11ca09c89ce"},"modified":"2015-07-01T12:17:41","modified_gmt":"2015-07-01T12:17:41","slug":"news-story-new-social-contract-between-the-public-health-and-care-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=58627","title":{"rendered":"News story: New social contract between the public, health and care services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> Link to full speech added<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Jeremy Hunt today called for a new social contract between the public, health and care services. <\/p>\n<p>In a speech to the Local Government Association (LGA) annual conference in Harrogate the Health Secretary urged the public to take more personal responsibility:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>for looking after the elderly<\/li>\n<li>for their own health <\/li>\n<li>in using finite NHS resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He argued that, while integration of health and social care is vital to delivering the highest standards of health and care, personal responsibility needs to sit alongside system accountability. <\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Hunt said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">By the end of this Parliament we will have a million more over 70s, one third of them living alone. Yes the health and social care system must do a much better job of looking after them. But so too must all of us as citizens as well.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On taking personal responsibility for our own health, he said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The best person to prevent a long term condition developing is not the doctor \u2013 it\u2019s you.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On using NHS resources responsibly, he said that proper funding for all public services depends on a strong economy and personal responsibility:  <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are insisting on a laser-like focus from the hospital sector to make sure every penny counts for patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">But there is a role for patients here too.
