{"id":59847,"date":"2015-07-31T11:36:40","date_gmt":"2015-07-31T11:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=d96b049813d60dc0e2074a8d726ded34"},"modified":"2015-07-31T11:36:40","modified_gmt":"2015-07-31T11:36:40","slug":"news-story-modern-slavery-offenders-face-life-in-jail-as-modern-slavery-act-comes-into-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=59847","title":{"rendered":"News story: Modern slavery offenders face life in jail as Modern Slavery Act comes into force."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Today, the new <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/2015\/30\/contents\">Modern Slavery Act<\/a> comes into force. <\/p>\n<p>\u2028\u2028The first series of measures, focused on criminal justice provisions, to come into force include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>ensuring that those who commit these crimes are subject to the toughest\u00a0 possible asset recovery regime.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>introducing Slavery and Trafficking Reparation orders, which encourage the courts to use seized assets to compensate victims.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>the commencement of regional pilots of the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) \u2013 the system used across Government and by various agencies to refer, protect and support victims of modern slavery.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Karen Bradley, Home Office Minister for Preventing Abuse and Exploitation, said:\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Today the new, consolidated and improved slavery and trafficking offences commence, ensuring that perpetrators receive the severe sentences their crimes deserve, including life imprisonment.\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n<p>This landmark legislation sends the strongest possible message to criminals &#8211; if you are involved in this vile trade you will be arrested, you will be prosecuted and you will be locked up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">\u2028\u2028We are standing up for the most vulnerable in society and it also says to victims that you are not alone \u2013 we are here to help you.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2028Earlier this week the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/pm-seeks-stronger-co-operation-with-vietnam-to-stop-modern-slavery-as-new-measures-come-into-force\">Prime Minister announced<\/a> that, following consultation, additional provisions that address the prevention of slavery in supply chains will come into force in October. <\/p>\n<p>The turnover threshold for businesses who must declare what steps they are taking to tackle modern slavery has been set at \u00a336m.\u2028\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Additional provisions of the Act which further address support for victims will be introduced later this year. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Criminals convicted of human trafficking and modern slavery face being sentenced to life in prison from today (Friday 31 July).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/59847"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=59847"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/59847\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=59847"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=59847"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=59847"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
