{"id":60318,"date":"2015-08-13T09:19:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-13T09:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=1c58e5d21a06b085ac41adb233f6db9a"},"modified":"2015-08-13T09:19:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-13T09:19:00","slug":"press-release-maths-entries-jump-at-a-level-as-pupils-embrace-academic-subjects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=60318","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Maths entries jump at A level as pupils embrace academic subjects"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Schools Minister Nick Gibb congratulated young people receiving their <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Education Advanced Level\">A level<\/abbr> results today as new figures showed the number of students studying maths rose significantly &#8211; with entries up more than 20% in just 5 years.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of a number of academic subjects to see increases following the government\u2019s drive to ensure more pupils studied them at both <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Education Advanced Level\">A level<\/abbr> through the introduction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/english-baccalaureate-ebacc\">English Baccalaureate (<abbr title=\"English Baccalaureate\">EBacc<\/abbr>) performance measure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Overall the number of entries in the facilitating subjects that are more often required by top universities than others are up by more than 15,000 since last year and 13.3% since 2010 &#8211; meaning more students are now studying the core academic subjects that will open doors to their future.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, entries into non-facilitating subjects are down by almost 12% compared to 5 years ago with big falls in subjects like general studies, which are often not recognised by universities, with almost 30,000 fewer entries since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Schools Minister Nick Gibb said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This year\u2019s <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Education Advanced Level\">A level<\/abbr> students are among the best qualified in a generation and I want to congratulate them on today\u2019s results which reflect the dedication of teachers and young people across the country.<\/p>\n<p>These results provide the clearest proof that the introduction of the <abbr title=\"English Baccalaureate\">EBacc<\/abbr> and our drive to persuade more pupils to study core academic subjects has been a success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">As a result, thousands more pupils from all backgrounds are studying subjects that will secure them a place at a top university or an apprenticeship and that will help to secure well paid employment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The growing rise in students taking facilitating subjects follows the introduction of the <abbr title=\"English Baccalaureate\">EBacc<\/abbr> performance measure, which encourages the study of these subjects at <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to 2014, today\u2019s results show entries have risen in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>further maths &#8211; up by 6.9%<\/li>\n<li>computing &#8211; up by 29.1%<\/li>\n<li>geography &#8211; up by 12.7%<\/li>\n<li>modern foreign languages &#8211; up by 3.8%<\/li>\n<li>English literature &#8211; up by 7.1%<\/li>\n<li>history &#8211; up by 7.1%<\/li>\n<li>maths &#8211; up by 4.4%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The number of <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Education Advanced Level\">A level<\/abbr> entries in science and maths subjects has increased by more than 38,000 since 2010, up by 17.3%.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2010, the government\u2019s plan for education has included a focus on encouraging more young people, especially women, to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (<abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr>) subjects. This has resulted in 16,000 more <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Education Advanced Level\">A level<\/abbr> entries for women.<\/p>\n<p>The number of entries in facilitating subjects by women has also increased by around 27,000 since 2010.  <\/p>\n<p>There were more than 850,000 <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Education Advanced Level\">A level<\/abbr> entries in 2015, and Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) figures show the proportion of pass rates has risen by 0.1 percentage points this year to 98.1%.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"notes-to-editors\">Notes to editors<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/english-baccalaureate-ebacc\"><abbr title=\"English Baccalaureate\">EBacc<\/abbr> measure<\/a> was introduced to key stage 4 <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.education.gov.uk\/schools\/performance\/\">performance tables<\/a> in 2010. It measures the number of students achieving A* to C in English, mathematics, sciences (including computer science), languages and humanities (geography or history) at <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr>.
