{"id":60900,"date":"2015-09-02T10:00:26","date_gmt":"2015-09-02T10:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=3f4d8d81ff470398b5189dfad934f1af"},"modified":"2015-09-02T10:00:26","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T10:00:26","slug":"press-release-accountants-advised-on-helping-clients-to-keep-it-legal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=60900","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Accountants advised on helping clients to keep it legal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Accountants are trusted advisers for businesses of all sizes working across all sectors, so they are well placed to guide clients on where to look for legal guidance.<\/p>\n<p>The Competition and Markets Authority (<abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr>) has created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/competition-law-information-for-chartered-accountants\">60-second summary<\/a> which provides an introduction to competition law after working closely with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (<abbr title=\"Association of Chartered Certified Accountants\">ACCA<\/abbr>) and The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (<abbr title=\"The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland\">ICAS<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>Judith Frame, <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr> Head of Compliance, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Research shows that many businesses, particularly smaller ones, could benefit from having a stronger understanding of how competition law affects them. So, we are delighted to have worked in partnership with representatives of the accountancy profession (<abbr title=\"Association of Chartered Certified Accountants\">ACCA<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland\">ICAS<\/abbr>) to develop this 60-second summary.<\/p>\n<p>It explains the importance of competition in creating a level playing field for businesses and outlines where accountants can find more information on anti-competitive behaviours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We hope this will help accountants put competition law on their clients\u2019 radars to help them avoid risks, and to benefit from competition.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ken McManus, Head of Practice Support and International Services at <abbr title=\"The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland\">ICAS<\/abbr>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Accountants are trusted advisers and as such are ideally placed to put competition law on the radar of business clients. Many businesses might be breaking the law without knowing it, with serious consequences. We\u2019ve worked in partnership with the <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr> to produce this quick guide and would encourage all accountants to make business clients aware of their duty to comply with competition law.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The summary draws attention to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/uk-businesses-understanding-of-competition-law\">research<\/a> which shows that 77% of businesses do not understand competition law well and outlines the potential penalties for breaking the law which can include fines of up to 10% of global turnover for businesses and a maximum 5-year jail term for individuals involved in cartels. Directors can also be disqualified for up to 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>It also provides accountants with useful pointers on how to familiarise themselves with common competition law risks and recommends steps that any business can take to deal with such risks.<\/p>\n<p>The resources can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/competition-law-information-for-chartered-accountants\"><abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr>\u2019s webpage<\/a> and are promoted by the 2 professional associations to alert members of the profession to the advice that is available.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"notes-for-editors\">Notes for editors<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>The <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr> is the UK\u2019s primary competition and consumer authority.
