Local councils are being urged to bid for support from a new scheme to help increase the collection, re-use and recycling of unwanted electrical items.<\/p>\n

Up to \u00a3775,000 has been made available by retailers, suppliers and manufacturers of electrical equipment as part of the Distributor Take-back Scheme<\/a> and the WEEE<\/abbr> Compliance Fee<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Single project bids of up to \u00a340,000 are sought from individual local authorities, with up to \u00a3100,000 available for consortia bids. <\/p>\n

Business Minister Anna Soubry said:<\/p>\n

We have around \u00a31 billion worth of electrical equipment in our homes which we no longer use but which still has real value.<\/p>\n

This business-led fund can help drive up levels of collection, re-use and recycling of unwanted electrical equipment. The fund will also help divert electrical waste from landfill and reduce waste by promoting the re-use of electrical appliances.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

All project proposals must be submitted to weee@bis.gsi.gov.uk<\/a> by 30 October 2015 and endorsed by the appropriate waste disposal authority.<\/p>\n

  1. The Distributor Take-back Scheme (DTS<\/abbr>) was approved by BIS<\/abbr> as an alternative to in-store take-back for retailers and distance-sellers to discharge some of their obligations under the UK WEEE<\/abbr> Regulations to ensure arrangements for customers to recycle waste electrical and electronic equipment. The DTS<\/abbr> will contribute up to \u00a3400,000 to these WEEE<\/abbr> improvement projects.<\/li>\n
  2. The WEEE<\/abbr> Compliance Fee (WCF<\/abbr>) was approved by BIS<\/abbr> under the UK WEEE<\/abbr> Regulations as a means for producer compliance schemes (PCSs<\/abbr>) to discharge some of their obligations on behalf of producers of electrical equipment as an alternative to directly collecting WEEE<\/abbr>. The WCF<\/abbr> will contribute up to \u00a3375,000 to these WEEE<\/abbr> improvement projects.<\/li>\n
  3. The schemes are approved by BIS<\/abbr> but are independently administered. <\/li>\n
