Opening remarks<\/h2>\n

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a pleasure to see so many of you here at this gala dinner.<\/p>\n

Just as it\u2019s been a pleasure welcoming the world\u2019s shipping industry to London this week.<\/p>\n

I hope you\u2019ve found it productive and stimulating.<\/p>\n

And after all the meetings, trade shows, receptions and conferences.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m delighted that over 800 of you are here tonight (10 September 2015).<\/p>\n

For a well-earned chance to relax and enjoy the culmination of London International Shipping Week 2015.<\/p>\n

There have been many highlights for me.<\/p>\n

The international round table at 10 Downing Street.<\/p>\n

Where me and my ministerial colleagues welcomed key industry players from around the world.<\/p>\n

To discuss the most important issues faced by the sector today. <\/p>\n

The launch of the Maritime growth study<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A hugely important document which sets out a future direction for how government and industry can work in partnership to boost maritime growth.<\/p>\n

And it was wonderful to have the royal patronage of Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal at the welcome reception<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

My mission as Transport Secretary has been to really position transport policy at the heart of government.<\/p>\n

Which means everything we do in transport must support sustainable economic growth.<\/p>\n

To create opportunity and prosperity.<\/p>\n

And maritime is an absolutely crucial part of that.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why we\u2019ve seen billions going into UK ports.<\/p>\n

Felixstowe.<\/p>\n

Southampton.<\/p>\n

Dover.<\/p>\n

Liverpool.<\/p>\n

London Gateway.<\/p>\n

To name a few.<\/p>\n

And why we\u2019re investing in better road and rail connections that supply these great shipping hubs. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s why I\u2019ve raised the profile of maritime within government.<\/p>\n

Why we\u2019ve been cutting unnecessary red tape which holds this industry back.<\/p>\n

Why we\u2019re investing in maritime training and apprenticeships.<\/p>\n

And why we strive to make London a fantastic place to do maritime business.<\/p>\n

But while domestic maritime policy is important.<\/p>\n

What really makes this industry unique is its global reach.<\/p>\n

Without international partnerships and collaboration, there is no maritime growth.<\/p>\n

This industry transcends national boundaries, national governments, and national economies.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s why this week is so important.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been showing what London and the UK can offer.<\/p>\n

Efficient global trade needs strong and competitive maritime centres like London to access the full range of services and expertise.<\/p>\n

So we\u2019re very proud to be a one-stop-shop for the global maritime industry.<\/p>\n

But London International Shipping Week is really about you.<\/p>\n

People from different countries coming together to talk, learn, and make new connections.<\/p>\n

And with more than 100 events going on this week, there\u2019s been lots to talk about.<\/p>\n

Growing markets and the direction of the global economy.<\/p>\n

Maritime security, and international naval co-operation to improve the governance of the seas.<\/p>\n

And the safety of our seafarers.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been really pleased that there\u2019s been a lot of debate about the role of women in the maritime industry.<\/p>\n

To get more women pursuing maritime careers.<\/p>\n

And to support those women who are already involved.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve talked about international governance.<\/p>\n

New technologies.<\/p>\n

And the protection of the marine environment.<\/p>\n

Issues that affect every single maritime country.<\/p>\n

And that ultimately link us all.<\/p>\n

So really, this week has been a celebration of the global maritime industry.<\/p>\n

And what\u2019s really made it successful is you.<\/p>\n

And thousands of other maritime professionals who have taken part.<\/p>\n

So on that note, I\u2019d like to finish by saying thanks.<\/p>\n

Thank you all for coming.<\/p>\n

For making London International Shipping Week 2015 so special.<\/p>\n

And for making this gala dinner a fitting conclusion. <\/p>\n
