{"id":61727,"date":"2015-09-18T14:59:01","date_gmt":"2015-09-18T14:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=1822c3bf41228a530a3c235b27961312"},"modified":"2015-09-18T14:59:01","modified_gmt":"2015-09-18T14:59:01","slug":"news-story-hajj-pilgrims-urged-to-be-aware-of-mers-advice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=61727","title":{"rendered":"News story: Hajj pilgrims urged to be aware of MERS advice"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Public Health England (<abbr title=\"Public Health England\">PHE<\/abbr>) and the National Travel Health Network and Centre (<abbr title=\"National Travel Health Network and Centre\">NaTHNaC<\/abbr>) are urging all Hajj pilgrims to ensure they are aware of the latest advice on the ongoing Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (<abbr title=\"Middle East respiratory syndrome\">MERS<\/abbr>) outbreak in the Middle East. <\/p>\n<p>The annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (<abbr title=\"Kingdom of Saudi Arabia\">KSA<\/abbr>), known as the Hajj, is expected to take place from 21 to 26 September 2015, with many pilgrims travelling from the UK. <\/p>\n<p>Risk of <abbr title=\"Middle East respiratory syndrome\">MERS<\/abbr> infection to UK residents travelling to the Middle East is low and the World Health Organization, <abbr title=\"Public Health England\">PHE<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"National Travel Health Network and Centre\">NaTHNaC<\/abbr> do not currently advise any travel restrictions to <abbr title=\"Kingdom of Saudi Arabia\">KSA<\/abbr> in relation to the ongoing outbreak.<br \/>\nHowever, the <abbr title=\"Kingdom of Saudi Arabia\">KSA<\/abbr> Ministry of Health recommends that certain groups postpone the performance of the Hajj and Umrah as a precautionary measure again this year. This recommendation applies to: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>elderly people<\/li>\n<li>those with chronic diseases (heart disease, kidney disease, respiratory disease, nervous system disorders and diabetes)<\/li>\n<li>individuals with congenital or acquired immunodeficiency<\/li>\n<li>pregnant women and children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In <abbr title=\"Kingdom of Saudi Arabia\">KSA<\/abbr>, cases of <abbr title=\"Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus\">MERS-CoV<\/abbr> occur throughout the year, with occasional peaks. Recently there has been a marked increase in cases reported from <abbr title=\"Kingdom of Saudi Arabia\">KSA<\/abbr>, particularly from Riyadh.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Richard Pebody, Head of Respiratory Diseases at <abbr title=\"Public Health England\">PHE<\/abbr> said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>There is growing evidence of the possible role of camels in transmitting <abbr title=\"Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus\">MERS-CoV<\/abbr> to humans.
