{"id":62290,"date":"2015-09-30T09:18:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-30T09:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=2b8687b85ac0f3f5601f449ab061bcb5"},"modified":"2015-09-30T09:18:00","modified_gmt":"2015-09-30T09:18:00","slug":"news-story-millions-of-commuters-now-using-governments-free-wi-fi-on-public-transport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=62290","title":{"rendered":"News story: Millions of commuters now using Government\u2019s free Wi-Fi on public transport"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The journey to work for millions of commuters across the UK has been improved thanks to free Wi-Fi having been installed on buses and trams as part of the Government\u2019s SuperConnected cities initiative.<\/p>\n<p>More than three million unique users are making regular use of the service, using the freely available Wi-Fi to grab the latest news headlines, check the weather, browse the Internet, send emails and use social media on their daily commute.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of buses, trams and trains in nine cities across the UK (Leeds, Bradford, Oxford, Manchester, Salford, York, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Newport) have been equipped with free public Wi-Fi. The latest usage figures highlight the scheme\u2019s popularity.<\/p>\n<p>Free Wi-Fi is now available on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>24 Trains and a similar number of buses in Leeds and Bradford (with more than 600,000 unique users now using the service)<\/li>\n<li>20 buses and 104 trams in Edinburgh (2.6 million unique users)<\/li>\n<li>112 buses in Newport (more than 25,000 unique users)<\/li>\n<li>224 buses in Cardiff (almost 90,000 unique users)<\/li>\n<li>116 buses and trams in Greater Manchester (more than 265,000 users per month)<\/li>\n<li>80 buses in York (almost 20,000 unique users)<\/li>\n<li>Almost 300 buses in Oxford (more than 100,000 users)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The rollout of free Wi-Fi on public transport has been a tremendous success and I\u2019m delighted that so many people are making use of it. Installing free Wi-Fi on public transport is one of the ways we\u2019re boosting connectivity across our cities and making sure the UK is properly equipped to meet the increasing demands of the digital age.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As well as providing free public Wi-Fi on public transport, the Superconnected Cities programme saw free public Wi-Fi installed in more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/1000-buildings-in-uk-cities-to-get-free-public-wi-fi\">1,000 buildings in 22 cities<\/a> across the UK.
