{"id":62381,"date":"2015-10-01T14:01:20","date_gmt":"2015-10-01T14:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=50c24d671cf54d3da3f447acd9d58c74"},"modified":"2015-10-01T14:01:20","modified_gmt":"2015-10-01T14:01:20","slug":"news-story-cma-welcomes-ryanairs-withdrawal-of-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=62381","title":{"rendered":"News story: CMA welcomes Ryanair\u2019s withdrawal of challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Ryanair sold its 29.8% stake to IAG last month following the European Commission\u2019s decision to clear IAG\u2019s bid for Aer Lingus and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/cma-welcomes-cat-judgment-on-ryanair-and-moves-to-approve-shareholding-sale\">granting of necessary approval<\/a> from the Competition and Markets Authority (<abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr>). <\/p>\n<p>In July, the Competition Appeal Tribunal (<abbr title=\"Competition Appeal Tribunal\">CAT<\/abbr>) dismissed Ryanair\u2019s appeal against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/cma-confirms-requirement-for-ryanair-to-reduce-aer-lingus-shareholding\"><abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr>\u2019s decision of 11 June 2015<\/a>. This had rejected Ryanair\u2019s claim that there had been a material change of circumstances since the <abbr title=\"Competition and Markets Authority\">CMA<\/abbr>\u2019s original decision requiring the airline to reduce its shareholding in Aer Lingus to 5%. Ryanair then sought permission from the Court of Appeal to appeal the <abbr title=\"Competition Appeal Tribunal\">CAT<\/abbr>\u2019s decision, but has now withdrawn that application. The appeal was formally dismissed by the Court of Appeal today.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Polito, Chairman of the Ryanair\/Aer Lingus inquiry group, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We welcome both the end and the outcome of this long running case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Our decision was that it was bad for competition &#8211; and ultimately for passengers &#8211; for Ryanair to retain an influence over one of its major competitors through its shareholding.
