Changes made in the last year include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>banning smoking in cars carrying under 18s<\/li>\n<li>increased speed limits for lorries on single and dual carriageways<\/li>\n<li>lower drink-drive limits in Scotland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Highway Code on GOV.UK now includes a list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/the-highway-code\/updates\">latest updates<\/a> that have been made, making it easier than ever to stay up to date.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/dvsagovuk\/do-you-know-whats-changed-in-the-highway-code-1e3uq\">Test your knowledge<\/a> of recent changes to The Highway Code on BuzzFeed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"more-ways-to-stay-up-to-date\">More ways to stay up to date<\/h2>\n<p>The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (<abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>) has been encouraging all road users to sign up to get reminders and updates about The Highway Code on email or social media. <\/p>\n<p>The Highway Code already has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>over 50,000 followers on <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HighwayCodeGB\">Twitter<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>over 38,000 fans on <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HighwayCodeGB\">Facebook<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>over 41,000 subscribers to <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/public.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/UKDVSA\/subscriber\/new?topic_id=UKDVSA_D_314\">weekly email reminders<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"changing-the-way-people-use-the-road\">Changing the way people use the road<\/h3>\n<p>Most people who get reminders from The Highway Code say they have used the road differently since getting them.<\/p>\n<p>Research carried out by <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> with people who use these services found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>83.2% of respondents improved their knowledge of the rules<\/li>\n<li>66.2% of respondents have used the road differently as a result<\/li>\n<li>94.1% of respondents would recommend the service to family and friends <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table class=\"js-barchart-table mc-auto-outdent\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Question<\/th>\n<th>Respondents who answered yes<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Improved knowledge and understanding<\/td>\n<td>83.2%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Used the road differently<\/td>\n<td>66.2%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Recommend to friends<\/td>\n<td>94.1%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Read the full findings in the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/the-highway-code-social-media-evaulation-2014\">The Highway Code: social media evaluation, 2014<\/a>\u2019 report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"the-importance-of-keeping-up-to-date\">The importance of keeping up-to-date<\/h2>\n<p>Transport Minister, Lord Ahmad, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Highway Code is essential reading for all road users \u2013 not just those who are learning to drive. It\u2019s now easier than ever to keep up to date with The Highway Code and the rules of the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Making sure all road users keep their skills and knowledge up to date will help to keep Great Britain\u2019s roads amongst the safest in the world.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 id=\"the-highway-code-is-essential-reading-for-everyone\">The Highway Code is essential reading for everyone<\/h3>\n<p>The most vulnerable road users are pedestrians, particularly children, older or disabled people, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important that all road users are aware of the code and are considerate towards each other.
