{"id":62784,"date":"2015-10-13T12:41:30","date_gmt":"2015-10-13T12:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=c69077b18eced56a8a1d9f614dbb222f"},"modified":"2015-10-13T12:41:30","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T12:41:30","slug":"news-story-new-partnership-targets-unsafe-drivers-and-operators-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=62784","title":{"rendered":"News story: New partnership targets unsafe drivers and operators in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>From today (13 October 2015), the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (<abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>) will take part in a new joint enforcement partnership which aims to reduce the number of unsafe lorry drivers and operators in London.<\/p>\n<p>The London Freight Enforcement partnership is made up of officers from the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> <\/li>\n<li>\n<a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/\">Transport for London<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Transport for London\">TfL<\/abbr>)<\/li>\n<li>the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/content.met.police.uk\/Home\">Metropolitan Police Service<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cityoflondon.police.uk\/Pages\/default.aspx\">City of London Police<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It brings together expertise from the different organisations and will carry out joint intelligence-led operations in the capital.  <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"roadside-checks\">Roadside checks<\/h2>\n<p>The police and <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> have the power to carry out spot checks on commercial vehicles. They\u2019re carried out to keep unsafe vehicles off the road.<\/p>\n<p>The officers check that the driver and vehicle aren\u2019t breaking any rules and regulations.<\/p>\n<p>They have the power to issue:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a prohibition, which stops the driver from driving until they get a problem with their vehicle fixed<\/li>\n<li>fixed penalties if the driver commits an offence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Find out more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/roadside-vehicle-checks-for-commercial-drivers\/checks-on-your-vehicle\">roadside vehicle checks for commercial drivers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"builds-on-the-success-of-the-hgv-task-force\">Builds on the success of the <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicle\">HGV<\/abbr> Task Force<\/h2>\n<p>The partnership builds on the success of the Heavy Goods Vehicle (<abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicle\">HGV<\/abbr>) Task Force.<\/p>\n<p>The task force was set up in October 2013 to reduce the number of cyclist fatalities caused by heavy goods vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Figures showed that 53% of cyclist fatalities in London between 2008 and 2013 involved direct contact with an <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicle\">HGV<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>The task force is made up of officers from the same organisations as the new  London Freight Enforcement partnership.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicle\">HGV<\/abbr> Task Force is jointly funded by <abbr title=\"Transport for London\">TfL<\/abbr> and the Department for Transport.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"task-force-successes\">Task force successes<\/h2>\n<p>Over the last 2 years, the task force has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>targeted and stopped more than 6,030 vehicles <\/li>\n<li>seized 87 vehicles<\/li>\n<li>referred 4,500 cases for prosecutions <\/li>\n<li>issued 2,134 fixed penalty notices <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In March 2015, the task force was also recognised as the first permanent multi-agency team dedicated to targeting offences by the most dangerous commercial vehicles. The task force was awarded with the Worshipful Company of Carmen\u2019s Royal Logistic Corps Safety Award for 2014.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"keeping-the-capitals-roads-safe\">Keeping the capital\u2019s roads safe<\/h2>\n<p>Transport Minister, Lord Ahmad, said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The London Freight Enforcement Partnership builds on the success of the Industrial <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicle\">HGV<\/abbr> Task Force.
