{"id":62827,"date":"2015-10-14T10:11:56","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T10:11:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=eb30e6f375869d07ac3282113ce7b1d0"},"modified":"2015-10-14T10:11:56","modified_gmt":"2015-10-14T10:11:56","slug":"press-release-number-of-uk-businesses-continues-to-grow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=62827","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Number of UK businesses continues to grow"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<ul>\n<li>record 5.4 million private sector businesses in the UK<\/li>\n<li>there are over 900,000 more businesses now than in 2010<\/li>\n<li>35,000 more businesses are employing people than last year<\/li>\n<li>small firms contribute 48% of private sector employment and add \u00a31.2 trillion in turnover to the economy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The number of private sector businesses in the UK has hit 5.4 million \u2013 a new record \u2013 according to official figures published today (14 October 2015).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/business-population-estimates-2015\">Business Population Estimates<\/a> also show the number of businesses that employ people has grown for the second year running, with 35,000 more at the start of 2015 than in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Small businesses continue to make up 99.3% of all businesses and generate over \u00a31 trillion turnover for the UK\u2019s economy. <\/p>\n<p>There has also been an increase in the number of medium-sized businesses, which employ between 50 and 249 people, with 1,000 more of these firms at the start of 2015 than in 2014. <\/p>\n<p>Business Minister Anna Soubry said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s fantastic news there are now a record number of businesses in the UK, creating jobs and ensuring our country\u2019s economic security.<\/p>\n<p>Our long-term economic plan has helped create the conditions for businesses to start, grow and flourish. <\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">But with risks in the global economy, this government is determined to continue to back our businesses and grow our economy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The figures also show there are 7,000 large businesses in the UK that employ over 10 million people and make a significant contribution to the economy (\u00a32 trillion turnover). <\/p>\n<p>The overall business population includes 3.3 million sole proprietors and 1.6 million companies.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"notes-to-editors\">Notes to editors<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>The figures published today (14 October 2015) are the official estimates of the UK business population in 2015.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/business-population-estimates-2015\">The Business Population Estimates 2015 statistical release<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>This robust estimate of the whole business population is obtained by adding the number of businesses registered for <abbr title=\"vaule added tax\">VAT<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"pay as you earn\">PAYE<\/abbr> to an estimate of the number of unregistered businesses, based on additional sources including the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/ons\/index.html\"><abbr title=\"Office for National Statistics\">ONS<\/abbr><\/a> Labour Force Survey and data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/hm-revenue-customs\"><abbr title=\"HM Revenue and Customs\">HMRC<\/abbr><\/a>. <\/li>\n<li>This gives a snapshot of businesses at the start of 2015. The reported 146,000 growth is the net annual change, taking into account all business start-ups, closures and also takeovers and mergers.
