{"id":63951,"date":"2015-11-10T15:53:00","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T15:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=a1cc4a345a5f4f1fab3d7084dfcb3e10"},"modified":"2015-11-10T15:53:00","modified_gmt":"2015-11-10T15:53:00","slug":"press-release-new-design-and-technology-gcse-will-inspire-next-top-designers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=63951","title":{"rendered":"Press release: New design and technology GCSE will inspire next top designers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>A new, gold-standard design and technology (<abbr title=\"design and technology\">D&amp;T<\/abbr>) <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr> to help produce the next generation of James Dysons and Tim Berners-Lees has been unveiled by Schools Minister Nick Gibb.<\/p>\n<p>The new design and technology <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr> will give students the chance to develop their own design briefs and projects and could lead them to producing anything from furniture for disabled people to computer-controlled robots.<\/p>\n<p>Industry experts, including those from the James Dyson Foundation, have been closely involved in developing the new <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr> content, ensuring it meets the future needs of employers.<\/p>\n<p>It is the latest qualification to be published as part of new, world-class <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/get-the-facts-gcse-and-a-level-reform\/get-the-facts-gcse-reform\">reformed GCSEs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/get-the-facts-gcse-and-a-level-reform\/get-the-facts-as-and-a-level-reform\">A levels<\/a>, which are improving the life chances of all young people, wherever they come from.<\/p>\n<p>Schools Minister Nick Gibb said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As part of our commitment to social justice, we are restoring rigour to the curriculum so all young people, irrespective of background, have access to an excellent, well-rounded education.<\/p>\n<p>We now have a design and technology <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr> which has been shaped by leading industry figures to significantly deepen students\u2019 understanding of this subject.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This is a rigorous qualification which will require students to have a sound grasp of maths and science, and which will undoubtedly stretch them to further develop the kind of knowledge and skills so sought after by employers and universities.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Internationally-renowned designer James Dyson said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Design and technology is a subject of fundamental importance. Logical, creative and practical \u2013 it\u2019s the only opportunity that school students have to apply what they learn in maths and science \u2013 directly preparing them for a career in engineering. But until now, this subject\u2019s tremendous potential has not been met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The James Dyson Foundation has spent 4 years advising the Department for Education on every level of <abbr title=\"design and technology\">D&amp;T<\/abbr> education \u2013 and today we can finally unveil a <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr> qualification to be proud of. One that will inspire invention from students and teachers alike. That will nurture a creative mind-set and passion for problem solving.
