{"id":64489,"date":"2015-11-22T09:00:34","date_gmt":"2015-11-22T09:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=59b8ad94851242f4bafcec88a8714347"},"modified":"2015-11-22T09:00:34","modified_gmt":"2015-11-22T09:00:34","slug":"news-story-chancellor-george-osborne-and-bill-gates-to-join-forces-to-end-malaria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=64489","title":{"rendered":"News story: Chancellor George Osborne and Bill Gates to join forces to end malaria"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Chancellor George Osborne and Bill Gates have announced they are to join forces as part of the global effort to end malaria.<\/p>\n<p>A new \u00a31 billion Ross Fund \u2013 named after Sir Ronald Ross, the first ever British Nobel Laureate who was recognised for his discovery that mosquitoes transmit malaria \u2013 will be used to support the global fight against malaria and other infectious diseases.  <\/p>\n<p>The announcement is part of a fundamental restructuring of Britain\u2019s aid budget to be set out by the government this week as part of the Chancellor\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/topical-events\/autumn-statement-and-spending-review-2015\">Spending Review<\/a>. Prosperity and security will be at the heart of the new strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The mission to eliminate malaria builds on commitments George Osborne first made on a visit to Uganda, where he promised to meet the 0.7% <abbr title=\"Official development assistance\">ODA<\/abbr> target and spend hundreds of millions of pounds to help the war against the disease. <\/p>\n<p>After delivering those promises in the last parliament, this announcement will see Britain step up its role in working to end the disease \u2013 and others that threaten pandemics that could hit Britain.<\/p>\n<p>The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have announced they will partner with the UK in this work, and have welcomed the Chancellor\u2019s announcement. <\/p>\n<p>The \u00a31 billion will include a \u00a3300 million package focused on malaria and other infectious diseases. This will include: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a \u00a390 million eradication of malaria implementation fund<\/li>\n<li>\u00a3100 million support for research and development into products for infectious diseases<\/li>\n<li>\u00a3115 million to develop new drugs, diagnostics and insecticides for malaria, TB and other infectious disease resistance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It will also fund work to target diseases with epidemic potential, neglected tropical diseases, and diseases with emerging resistance. <\/p>\n<p>Good progress has been made to stop the spread of malaria \u2013 malaria deaths have fallen by a third since 2010.
