{"id":64593,"date":"2015-11-25T14:49:00","date_gmt":"2015-11-25T14:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=c832ad96cfc02ccf03ea9d7a62fc1d14"},"modified":"2015-11-25T14:49:00","modified_gmt":"2015-11-25T14:49:00","slug":"statement-to-parliament-prisons-announcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=64593","title":{"rendered":"Statement to Parliament: Prisons announcement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Social Reform is at the heart of this government\u2019s programme, and nowhere is that more true<br \/>\nthan in criminal justice.<\/p>\n<p>We are embarking on a radical reform of our prisons to rehabilitate offenders, cut crime and<br \/>\nenhance public safety. Investment for nine new prisons which will have better facilities for work<br \/>\nand education has already been announced.<\/p>\n<p>Today I can also announce a new beginning for female offenders with women prisoners serving<br \/>\ntheir sentences in more humane surroundings better designed to keep them out of crime. We will<br \/>\nclose the inadequate and antiquated Holloway prison and invest in 21st century solutions to the<br \/>\nproblems of criminality.<\/p>\n<p>For women offenders in London, we are now in a position to hold them on remand in the more<br \/>\nmodern facilities at HMP Bronzefield. We will also re-open newly refurbished facilities at HMP<br \/>\nDownview as a women\u2019s prison later next year. This will allow sentenced women to be held in an<br \/>\nenvironment that is more appropriate for many of those currently sent to Holloway. Both provide a<br \/>\nbetter setting for children visiting their mothers. Both are well located with good transport links to<br \/>\nLondon.<\/p>\n<p>I am very grateful to the hardworking staff in the prison who have deservedly won praise for their<br \/>\nwork. Despite their inspirational efforts, Holloway\u2019s design and physical state do not provide the<br \/>\nbest environment for the rehabilitation of women offenders. Her Majesty\u2019s Chief Inspector of<br \/>\nPrisons\u2019 last published inspection of Holloway noted that the \u201csize and poor design make it a very<br \/>\ndifficult establishment to run\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>I am extremely mindful that Holloway holds many vulnerable women. For that reason, no one will<br \/>\nbe moved immediately and we will not close the prison until services similar to those currently<br \/>\nprovided for women offenders are in place elsewhere.
