{"id":65897,"date":"2015-12-26T09:30:21","date_gmt":"2015-12-26T09:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=5e455543346c22d944b5835deaba9c48"},"modified":"2015-12-26T09:30:21","modified_gmt":"2015-12-26T09:30:21","slug":"news-story-the-story-of-your-boxing-day-boxset-record-tax-relief-for-big-budget-tv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=65897","title":{"rendered":"News story: The story of your Boxing Day boxset: record tax relief for big budget TV"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Chancellor today (Saturday 26 December) welcomed record support for UK made TV productions as he announced the success of the government\u2019s first two years of High-End TV tax relief.<\/p>\n<p>Doubling the previous year\u2019s total, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/487448\/Creatives_Statistics__-_Additional_Tables_HETV_2_1b_and_2_3-2_6_Dec_2015.pdf\">new statistics published by the government<\/a> show that 50 new television productions in the UK were supported by High-End TV tax relief in 2014 to 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Since the relief was introduced in 2013 the government has contributed a total of nearly \u00a392 million to 90 British big-budget television programmes.<\/p>\n<p>Over \u00a3820 million has been invested into Britain\u2019s creative economy since 2013 by high-end TV production companies that could qualify for the relief.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure the UK remains competitive on the world stage for TV production, in 2013 the government began providing the same support it offers film production to high-end TV. <\/p>\n<p>Since then many of the nation\u2019s favourite big budget TV shows, such as Game of Thrones, Outlander and Downton Abbey have been able to claim tax relief.<\/p>\n<p>Chancellor George Osborne said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The UK is the world leader in producing high quality, original television content. As many of us settle in for some television this Boxing Day, I\u2019m delighted that many of the programmes we watch will be made in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Through our tax relief the government has been able to support the TV industry meaning record investment and a booming creative sector jobs market across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">With many British shows being nominated for international awards and more commissioned, the future of British television is bright this Christmas.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The UK television industry is one of the global leaders for on-screen talent, screenwriting, crew and infrastructure and location filming.  <\/p>\n<p>In addition, original UK programme formats including The Office, Shameless and Being Human have been exported, remade and broadcast in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>This year the UK\u2019s top three exported boxsets to China were Sherlock, Downtown Abbey and Black Mirror, whilst Game of Thrones, Da Vinci\u2019s Demons and Outlander had major economic impacts in their regional filming locations.<\/p>\n<p>To qualify for High-End TV Tax relief a production must: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pass the cultural test<\/li>\n<li>be a drama, comedy or documentary<\/li>\n<li>have at least 25% of the total production costs relating to activities in the UK<\/li>\n<li>spend more than \u00a31 million on production costs per hour<\/li>\n<li>be longer than 30 minutes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Access a list of <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bfi.org.uk\/sites\/bfi.org.uk\/files\/downloads\/bfi-high-end-television-productions-certified-british-through-high-end-television-cultural-test-2015-11.xls\">other High End TV shows that have been certified though the Cultural test<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"history-of-the-boxset\">History of the Boxset<\/h3>\n<p>Late 90s &#8211; The golden age of US drama \u2013 The Sopranos (1999), The Wire (2002), West Wing (1999)<\/p>\n<p>Mid 00s -The American Boxset imports, because shows were not widely available in the UK, Breaking Bad (2008) Mad Men (2007)<\/p>\n<p>2010s \u2013 Rise of British international success \u2013 Sherlock (2010), Downtown Abbey (2010), Black Mirror (2011)<\/p>\n<p>2011 &#8211; Game of Thrones Season 1 begins<\/p>\n<p>2012 &#8211; High-End TV Relief announced <\/p>\n<p>2013 \u2013 High-End TV tax relief begins 1 April <\/p>\n<p>2014 \u2013 Scotland saw a record \u00a345.2 million spent on production <\/p>\n<p>2015 &#8211; Game of Thrones Season 6 shoot in Northern Ireland <\/p>\n<p>2015 &#8211; Outlander Season 2 begins filming in Scotland through inward investment <\/p>\n<p>2015 &#8211; Amazon Prime\u2019s first UK original drama, an eight-part series produced by Lookout Point called The Collection, to be made in Wales and France with BBC Worldwide and Pinewood Pictures.
