{"id":66444,"date":"2016-01-14T16:47:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T16:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=cb8936c45720ed2a64c696bd28dc5151"},"modified":"2016-01-15T17:12:17","modified_gmt":"2016-01-15T17:12:17","slug":"news-story-the-end-of-the-ebola-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=66444","title":{"rendered":"News story: The end of the Ebola epidemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> Update on the emergence of a new case of Ebola in Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Today, (14 January 2016) the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/news\/releases\/2016\/ebola-zero-liberia\/en\/\">World Health Organisation<\/a> has declared Liberia free of Ebola. <\/p>\n<p>It puts an end to the widespread outbreak in West Africa, with Liberia joining Guinea and Sierra Leone to go 42 days without a new case &#8211; which is double the incubation time of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>It also marks an end to the world\u2019s worst outbreak of the disease, which killed over 11,300 people in West Africa alone and with cases reaching around the globe to the US and Europe.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<h3 id=\"update---15-january-2016\">UPDATE &#8211; 15 January 2016<\/h3>\n<p>A new case of Ebola has emerged in Sierra Leone, according to the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/news\/statements\/2016\/new-ebola-case\/en\/\">World Health Organisation<\/a>.<br \/>\nSmall-scale flare-ups like this are to be expected. With the Ebola epidemic at large over, we will continue to work with Sierra Leone to prevent such recurrences becoming another widespread crisis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The UK led the international response to the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone, committing \u00a3427 million to ending the epidemic.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"feature-life-after-ebola---see-the-full-storyhttpsmediumcomdfiduklife-after-ebola-c8de1ddb39fd8o9igwrml\">Feature: Life After Ebola &#8211; <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@DFID_UK\/life-after-ebola-c8de1ddb39fd#.8o9igwrml\">see the full story<\/a><br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Picture: Simon Davis\/DFID\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/48732\/LifeAfterEbola-GOVUK.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Picture: Simon Davis\/DFID<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Britain worked alongside the US, who led global efforts in Liberia, and France who focussed international support on Guinea.<\/p>\n<p>Development Secretary Justine Greening said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This is a huge milestone for West Africa which is now free from Ebola for the first time in over 2 years thanks to an unprecedented global response.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Britain led the fight against this devastating disease in Sierra Leone, and I am hugely proud of our brave medics, scientists, military and aid workers who worked tirelessly and put their lives on the line. Their efforts saved thousands of lives in West Africa and helped protect the UK from an epidemic that was only ever a plane ride away.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Sierra Leone has made tremendous progress in tackling the outbreak and we will continue to stand by them. By strengthening health systems, funding vaccine trials and working with survivors we are helping the country get back on its feet and prepare for future crises, so it can look ahead to a brighter future.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>More than 250 UK aid staff worked on the crisis. Over 1,500 British military personnel were deployed to Sierra Leone to help oversee the construction of six UK-funded treatment centres, and trained over 4,000 Sierra Leonean and international healthcare workers.<\/p>\n<p>The UK also deployed over 150 NHS volunteers who worked on the frontline to support over 1,500 treatment and isolation beds \u2013 more than half of all the beds available for Ebola patients in the country. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"infographic-in-numbers---full-version-on-flickrhttpswwwflickrcomphotosdfid22408423547inalbum-72157660897094631\">Infographic: In numbers &#8211; <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dfid\/22408423547\/in\/album-72157660897094631\/\">full version on Flickr<\/a><br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Infographic: Ricci Coughlan\/DFID\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/48733\/Ebola-InNumbers.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Infographic: Ricci Coughlan\/DFID<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Director General of the World Health Organisation, Dr Margaret Chan said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">So much was needed and so much was accomplished by national authorities, heroic health workers, civil society, local and international organizations and generous partners.<br \/>\nBut our work is not done and vigilance is necessary to prevent new outbreaks.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"time-to-rebuild\">Time to rebuild<\/h2>\n<p>Britain will help Sierra Leone to get people back in business, improve healthcare and get children back to school.<\/p>\n<p>The UK has committed a total of \u00a3240 million to support Sierra Leone\u2019s recovery over the next 2 years, of which a portion will be focused on building resilience and preparedness for future outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>Our ongoing support for Sierra Leone includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Help for over 4,000 Ebola survivors, who face ongoing health problems and potential stigmatisation.
