A stretch of the A1 at Gateshead will be closed overnight from tonight, Monday 25 January, as part of a major project to add an extra lane to the dual carriageway. <\/p>\n

Contractors for Highways England are currently widening the A1 to 3 lanes and creating a new parallel link road between Lobley Hill and Gateshead Quays which will reduce congestion and support development and economic growth.<\/p>\n

All the closures will take place from Monday to Friday, between 8pm and 6am, to complete work in the central reservation. Clearly signed diversion will be in place, including a separate diversion for heavy goods vehicles. <\/p>\n

Highways England project manager Lynne Biddles said: <\/p>\n

We understand there have been a lot of closures on the A1 but it is essential that this work takes place and we would like to thank drivers for their patience so far.<\/p>\n

The closures will take place overnight when traffic levels are at their lowest in order to keep disruption to a minimum.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

From tonight through to the end of February, the A1 will be closed overnight between junction 67 (Coal House) and junction 69 (Gateshead Quays). <\/p>\n

From Monday 29 February for a week, the A1 will be closed overnight between junction 67 and junction 73 (Derwenthaugh). <\/p>\n

From Monday 7 March until Easter weekend, the northbound carriageway will be closed between junctions 67 and 69, and on the southbound carriageway between junctions 69 and 68 (Lobley Hill). <\/p>\n

From Easter until the completion of the scheme there will also be a series of closures between junctions 67 and 69.<\/p>\n
