{"id":67610,"date":"2016-02-15T09:02:55","date_gmt":"2016-02-15T09:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=c2969baf1b9b7c6a2bf124ac27242c05"},"modified":"2016-02-15T09:02:55","modified_gmt":"2016-02-15T09:02:55","slug":"news-story-sphere-fluidics-biotherapeutics-device-attracts-7m-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=67610","title":{"rendered":"News story: Sphere Fluidics: biotherapeutics device attracts $7m investment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>A Cambridge life sciences company that has developed a revolutionary system for single-cell analysis in the biopharmaceutical market, with support from Innovate UK, has secured private investment totalling $7 million.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spherefluidics.com\/\">Sphere Fluidics<\/a> Ltd\u2019s Cyto-Mine\u00ae device promises to transform the discovery and development of biotherapeutics for treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases and vaccine generation.<\/p>\n<p>The company, based at the Babraham Research Campus in Cambridge, plans to launch a commercial version of Cyto-Mine\u00ae later this year.<\/p>\n<p>The funding round was led by an Asian corporate investor but included existing angel investors and funds such as <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.24haymarket.com\/\">24Haymarket<\/a>, <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/parkwalkadvisors.com\/\">Parkwalk Advisors<\/a> and <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lbangels.co.uk\/\">London Business Angels<\/a>. A number of leading biopharmaceutical companies are also helping to fund development of the device.<\/p>\n<p>Sphere Fluidics benefited in 2015 from Innovate UK funding for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/innovation-get-details-about-innovate-uk-funding-competitions#feasibility-studies\">feasibility study<\/a> and a follow-on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/innovation-get-details-about-innovate-uk-funding-competitions#collaborative-research-and-development\">collaborative R&amp;D project<\/a>, together totalling \u00a3310,000. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"innovate-uk-funding-for-prototype\">Innovate UK funding for prototype<\/h2>\n<p>The company has just been awarded \u00a3340,000 for a further three-year collaborative R&amp;D project.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive officer Dr Frank Craig said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">That early funding from Innovate UK allowed us to develop a prototype system with <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medimmune.com\/\">Medimmune<\/a> for the biopharmaceutical market. It gave us real momentum and was also the \u2018hook\u2019 that got private investors interested.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We are very pleased now to have ongoing investor support and also to extend our business activity and fund-raising success to Asia.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cyto-Mine\u00ae can perform millions of single-cell assays daily, offering up to a 100-fold improvement over conventional techniques.
