{"id":69750,"date":"2016-04-20T09:54:56","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T09:54:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=be4c4c0ecc9876b44692885b08f7398e"},"modified":"2016-04-20T09:54:56","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T09:54:56","slug":"news-story-detecting-radio-frequency-emissions-more-accurately","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=69750","title":{"rendered":"News story: Detecting radio-frequency emissions more accurately"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.plextek.com\/\">Plextek<\/a> has tested a way to locate radio-frequency (<abbr title=\"radio-frequency\">RF<\/abbr>) emissions with a high degree of accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>With Centre for Defence Enterprise (<abbr title=\"Centre for Defence Enterprise\">CDE<\/abbr>) funding, the company has developed an algorithm to analyse compressed <abbr title=\"radio-frequency\">RF<\/abbr> samples from multiple antennas. This will determine the frequency and bearing of an <abbr title=\"radio-frequency\">RF<\/abbr> emitter.<\/p>\n<p>The algorithm doesn\u2019t rely on knowledge of the signal to be detected, instead it looks for the presence of energy at a particular frequency within a time window. It can then report the angle of arrival at a much better rate than the frequency required by conventional receiver architectures. It can therefore maximise the likelihood of detecting previously unknown threats.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the testing, real-world emitter data was captured covering a variety of <abbr title=\"radio-frequency\">RF<\/abbr> emitter sources. These included cellular (2G, 3G) and radar (pulsed Air Traffic Control and frequency-modulated continuous-wave ground surveillance).<\/p>\n<p>Plextek seeks to build on the knowledge gained from this project to develop a lightweight, modular capable demonstrator, which has the potential to capture real-time <abbr title=\"radio-frequency\">RF<\/abbr> emitter sources.<\/p>\n<p>Plextek intends to couple the demonstrator with a narrow-band receiver to replicate a possible usage configuration for more detailed analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Doig, Plextek Business Development Consultant said: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We\u2019re pleased to have continued our successful relationship with <abbr title=\"Centre for Defence Enterprise\">CDE<\/abbr>, securing 6 projects across 4 themed competitions in 2015.
