{"id":69751,"date":"2016-04-20T09:48:11","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T09:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=c399027d6dfe4bd2c55164f0eb2e53d9"},"modified":"2016-04-20T09:48:11","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T09:48:11","slug":"news-story-ultra-lightweight-optical-system-for-aerial-ground-imaging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=69751","title":{"rendered":"News story: Ultra-lightweight optical system for aerial ground imaging"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Through Centre for Defence Enterprise (<abbr title=\"Centre for Defence Enterprise\">CDE<\/abbr>) funding, <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.glyndwrinnovations.co.uk\/\">Glynd\u0175r Innovations<\/a> has developed an ultra-lightweight optical system for use on unmanned aerial vehicles (<abbr title=\"unmanned aerial vehicles\">UAV<\/abbr>) for aerial ground imaging applications where weight is critical. <\/p>\n<p>A complete working demonstrator has been developed and built, weighing less than 1 kg excluding sensor, and sample images have been taken. The images show that the principles of the design are sound and provide a good basis for further development. The low weight of the system, when used on a <abbr title=\"unmanned aerial vehicles\">UAV<\/abbr>, will allow the aircraft to remain airborne for longer periods.<\/p>\n<p>Next steps for Glynd\u0175r Innovations include developing the design, reducing the mass and space even further and making the system adaptable for a wider range of imaging uses. <\/p>\n<p>Richard Hazelwood, Sales Executive, Glynd\u0175r Innovations says: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The involvement with <abbr title=\"Centre for Defence Enterprise\">CDE<\/abbr> and the \u2018persistent surveillance from the air\u2019 project has enabled us to take an idea we had and develop a fully functional lightweight optical system. This has developed considerable interest from a number of potential customers who were looking for just this capability.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Glynd\u0175r Innovations is based in North Wales and is part of Glyndwr University. The company designs and builds optical support systems. The Glynd\u0175r Innovations team has core skills in optics, opto-mechanical systems and systems involving precision actuation and is supported by metrology and engineering teams based on site.
