{"id":69752,"date":"2016-04-20T09:43:21","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T09:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=fe0f5ad0ed02fadf391e465dea17d87a"},"modified":"2016-04-20T09:43:21","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T09:43:21","slug":"news-story-communications-from-high-altitude-unmanned-air-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=69752","title":{"rendered":"News story: Communications from high-altitude unmanned air systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.roke.co.uk\/\">Roke<\/a> has been funded by the Centre for Defence Enterprise (<abbr title=\"Centre for Defence Enterprise\">CDE<\/abbr>) for a project to allow communications from a high-altitude unmanned air system (<abbr title=\"unmanned air system\">UAS<\/abbr>) to be transmitted via a standard 4G data-card from the <abbr title=\"unmanned air system\">UAS<\/abbr> to commercial base stations. <\/p>\n<p>Due to the extreme height of high altitude, long endurance (<abbr title=\"high altitude, long endurance\">HALE<\/abbr>) aircraft this concept wouldn\u2019t normally work. Commercial base station antenna beams point horizontally, rather than being directed skywards, to give maximum coverage to ground-based phone users. <\/p>\n<p>Roke\u2019s demonstrator system will demonstrate the principle of automatic base station location and beamforming. While an applique coupled to a standard 4G phone will enable the system to connect to base stations much further away than normal.<\/p>\n<p>This capability could be used for <abbr title=\"high altitude, long endurance\">HALE<\/abbr> aircraft or those with very low size, weight and power requirements. <\/p>\n<p>Roke, based near Romsey, was founded in 1956 and currently employs around 350 people.
