It was also revealed that these companies manufacture and export over \u00a38.1 billion of medicinal and pharmaceutical products per year.<\/p>\n<p>Announcing the data at the BioTrinity Conference in London, Life Sciences Minister George Freeman MP said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This data shows that the UK\u2019s \u00a356 billion life sciences industry is a powerhouse in the Northern economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Through our life sciences strategy we are creating jobs, opportunities and security across the North. With its world-leading universities, innovative life sciences companies and millions of <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> patients across the region, the North has unique capabilities with excellent growth potential for international investors.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The statistics originate from the 2015 Strength and Opportunity Report. The data forms part of a new Northern Powerhouse life sciences brochure created to drive inward investment into the thriving life sciences sector in the North.<\/p>\n<p>The work was commissioned by UK Trade and Investment (<abbr title=\"UK Trade and Investment\">UKTI<\/abbr>) and was created in collaboration with the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thenhsa.co.uk\">Northern Health Science Alliance<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Northern Health Science Alliance\">NHSA<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Northern Health Science Alliance\">NHSA<\/abbr> chair, and Vice-President and Dean of The University of Manchester\u2019s Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, Professor Ian Greer said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The great universities and <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> organisations of the North have been working collaboratively with each other and industry to establish some of the most advanced facilities populated by world-leading experts in their field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Together with a 15 million population there is a massive untapped resource for international investors and industry to work with the Northern Powerhouse for mutual benefit.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The brochure showcases the world class facilities that the North has to offer such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the \u00a338 million <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uk-cpi.com\/biologics\/\">National Biologics Manufacturing Centre<\/a> within the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uk-cpi.com\/\">Centre for Process Innovation<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Centre for Process Innovation\">CPI<\/abbr>) which will host the \u00a320 million <abbr title=\"Centre for Process Innovation\">CPI<\/abbr> Biologics Factory of the Future<\/li>\n<li>the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/amr.dundee.ac.uk\/\">UK Antimicrobial Resistance Centre<\/a> &#8211; a \u00a34 million investment in AMR therapeutics development Medicines Discovery Catapult \u2013 worth \u00a34 million the Catapult is a joint private-public initiative to support the development of new antibiotics and diagnostics through a fully integrated development capability, offering translational <abbr title=\"Research and Development\">R&amp;D<\/abbr> from pre-clinical hits through to clinical proof of concept<\/li>\n<li>\n<a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.astrazeneca.co.uk\/astrazeneca-in-uk\/our-uk-sites\/alderley-park\">Alderley Park<\/a> in Cheshire &#8211; with over \u00a3550 million invested by AstraZeneca in world-class facilities and infrastructure over the past decade, Alderley Park is one of the best invested bioscience <abbr title=\"Research and Development\">R&amp;D<\/abbr> sites in Europe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The North also boasts one of the Europe\u2019s strongest clusters in biological, medical and surgical manufacturing with Eli Lilly, Allergan, Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, Seqirus, JRI Orthopaedics, and DePuy Synthes based there.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"notes-to-editors\">Notes to editors<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"ukti\"><abbr title=\"UK Trade and Investment\">UKTI<\/abbr><\/h3>\n<p><abbr title=\"UK Trade and Investment\">UKTI<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/ukti-life-sciences-organisation\">Life Sciences Organisation<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Life Sciences Organisation\">LSO<\/abbr>) works to bring high quality inward investment into the UK, from the earliest <abbr title=\"Research and Development\">R&amp;D<\/abbr> collaborations through to clinical trials, commercial and manufacturing operations. <\/p>\n<p>The team offers both new and existing inward investors a bespoke service, tailoring support to the requirements of the client. From 2016, <abbr title=\"Life Sciences Organisation\">LSO<\/abbr> will work as a joint team with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/office-for-life-sciences\">Office for Life Sciences<\/a>, better aligning life sciences policymaking with delivery of exports and inward investment. <\/p>\n<h3 id=\"northern-health-science-alliance\">Northern Health Science Alliance<\/h3>\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thenhsa.co.uk\">Northern Health Science Alliance Ltd<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Northern Health Science Alliance\">NHSA<\/abbr>) is a partnership established by the leading Universities and <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> Hospital Trusts in the North of England to improve the health and wealth of the region by creating an internationally recognised life science and healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"Northern Health Science Alliance\">NHSA<\/abbr> links 8 universities and 8 <abbr title=\"National Health Service\">NHS<\/abbr> Teaching Trusts with the newly formed Academic Health Science Networks (<abbr title=\"Academic Health Science Networks\">AHSNs<\/abbr>).
