{"id":70290,"date":"2016-05-08T23:00:18","date_gmt":"2016-05-08T23:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=da2c10dd5f3f0ef50a255b226d7a16cf"},"modified":"2016-05-08T23:00:18","modified_gmt":"2016-05-08T23:00:18","slug":"press-release-scenic-sight-restorations-set-to-boost-great-british-coast-staycations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=70290","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Scenic sight restorations set to boost Great British Coast staycations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Lighthouses and lidos along the Great British Coast are among 15 projects benefitting from a share of \u00a3700,000 Communities Minister Mark Francois announced today (9 May 2016).<\/p>\n<p>The projects \u2013 dotted across the country from Durham to Dorset \u2013 have been awarded up to \u00a350,000 each to help restore local landmarks to their former glory.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Francois hopes that the work will encourage a wave of enthusiasm for trips to our much-loved seaside areas \u2013 and help boost the \u00a34 billion that tourism generates for coastal communities every year.<\/p>\n<p>Coastal Communities Minister Mark Francois said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Across our Great British Coast we\u2019ve got heritage hooks to be proud of, but some of these places need some tender, loving, care.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why over the past year we\u2019ve invested \u00a33.7 million to get them back into ship-shape and now 15 more brilliant British attractions will be buoyed up by work to restore them to their former glory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This country has sight-seeing gems that are a match for anywhere in the world and I\u2019d urge people to take a trip down to the seaside to discover them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"spruced-up-seaside-sights\">Spruced-up seaside sights<\/h2>\n<p>Projects receiving funding today include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Churches Conservation Trust in Kent to provide access to the tower of St Peter\u2019s Church Sandwich offering a birds-eye view over one of the most complete medieval townscapes in England<\/li>\n<li>Illfracombe Museum in Devon to protect and preserve its unique collection of Victorian curiosities right on the seafront<\/li>\n<li>Maryport Coastal Community Team in Cumbria to brighten up the local lighthouse, getting it back into working order and putting the spotlight on Maryport as a tourist destination<\/li>\n<li>Ryde town council on the Isle of Wight to revitalise the western gardens, creating an arts and performance area, around Ryde pier<\/li>\n<li>South Shields council to develop options to help link tourist trails on the South Shields peninsula from historic sites like the Arbeia Roman Fort to the forthcoming North East Centre for the Written Word &#8211; The Word<\/li>\n<li>Lancaster city council to give a new lease of life to a disused lido in Morecambe and turn into a welcome venue for festivals, arts and leisure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Download the <span id=\"attachment_1539044\" class=\"attachment-inline\"><br \/>\n  <a href=\"\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/521564\/Details_of_all_15_projects.pdf\">details of all 15 projects<\/a><br \/>\n  (<span class=\"type\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>, <span class=\"file-size\">143KB<\/span>, <span class=\"page-length\">2 pages<\/span>)<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>This funding builds on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/iconic-coastal-heritage-sites-set-for-3-million-makeover\">77 projects awarded a share of \u00a33 million<\/a> through the Coastal Revival Fund in December 2015 which includes renovation work on Blackpool\u2019s iconic Winter Gardens.<\/p>\n<p>The renovations to these much-loved venues \u2013 and the jobs and opportunity they create \u2013 are part of the wider government work to rebalance the economy and help all areas of the country thrive. <\/p>\n<p>Through the Coastal Communities Fund \u00a3120 million has been invested across the UK in the last 3 years alone, protecting or creating up to 18,000 jobs. Analysis has shown that that money is well spent with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/investment-in-great-british-coast-is-money-well-spent\">every \u00a31 invested having the potential to create an up to \u00a38 boost<\/a> to our coastal economies.<\/p>\n<p>The Great British Coast has enormous economic potential and local people really care about the future of their seaside areas.
