{"id":70547,"date":"2016-05-13T15:52:01","date_gmt":"2016-05-13T15:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=0800b0d3bf065cdb92918f4a3a0116bb"},"modified":"2016-05-13T15:52:01","modified_gmt":"2016-05-13T15:52:01","slug":"press-release-justine-greening-joins-british-students-to-fundraise-for-syrias-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=70547","title":{"rendered":"Press release: Justine Greening joins British students to fundraise for Syria\u2019s children"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The UK government is matching every pound that schools raise for Syrian children on UNICEF\u2019s <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unicef.org.uk\/fundraise\/events\/other-events\/day-for-change\/\">Day for Change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>International Development Secretary Justine Greening visited Birmingham\u2019s Somerville Primary School today, to support students\u2019 efforts to raise money for Syrian children who have been born into a life of brutal conflict.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government is doubling money raised by schools across the UK that are taking part in UNICEF UK\u2019s Day for Change appeal, an annual campaign to involve school children in efforts to protect children in danger.<\/p>\n<p>Funds raised this year will provide children and families affected by the Syria crisis with urgent life-saving support such as vaccinations, health treatment and psychological support.<\/p>\n<p>Justine Greening joined students in a lesson on the importance of education during humanitarian emergencies before opening a fayre with fundraising activities like bouncy castles, raffles and \u2018sponge the teacher\u2019 stands.<\/p>\n<p>International Development Secretary Justine Greening said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Britain\u2019s young people are more passionate about international issues than any generation before them.<\/p>\n<p>Their fundraising efforts \u2013 like those I\u2019ve seen today from the students at Birmingham\u2019s Somerville Primary School &#8211; show that they understand the leading role that the UK has to play in the world, and that\u2019s why we are doubling every penny schools have raised for Syria on UNICEF\u2019s Day for Change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Together we\u2019ll reach thousands more children caught in this brutal conflict with lifesaving help.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Syria is the world\u2019s biggest crisis and UNICEF estimates that over 8 million children are in need of humanitarian assistance inside Syria.<\/p>\n<p>The UK has already pledged over \u00a32.3 billion to the Syria crisis and, as well as supporting children with food, shelter and healthcare, has committed to getting all refugee children into education by the end of the next school year to ensure there is \u2018No Lost Generation\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>ENDS<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"notes-to-editors\">Notes to editors<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>The UK will double funds raised by schools taking part in UNICEF UK\u2019s Day for Change appeal up to \u00a35 million.<\/li>\n<li>The UK Aid Match scheme, run by the Department for International Development, sees the government match public donations to charity appeals to reduce poverty in developing countries.
