{"id":71804,"date":"2016-06-30T08:45:04","date_gmt":"2016-06-30T08:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=6691ebca12ca250b6af6c6fe8420daed"},"modified":"2016-06-30T08:45:04","modified_gmt":"2016-06-30T08:45:04","slug":"news-story-stephen-glaister-reappointed-as-chair-of-the-orr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=71804","title":{"rendered":"News story: Stephen Glaister reappointed as chair of the ORR"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Professor Stephen Glaister <abbr title=\"Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire\">CBE<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Fellowship of the Institution of Civil Engineers\">FICE<\/abbr> FTRF <abbr title=\"Fellowship of the City &amp; Guilds\">FCGI<\/abbr> has been reappointed as the chair of the Office of Rail and Road (<abbr title=\"Office of Rail and Road\">ORR<\/abbr>) until December 2017, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin announced today (30 June 2016).<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Office of Rail and Road\">ORR<\/abbr> is the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u2019s independent rail regulator and strategic roads monitor for England. Accountable to Parliament, it protects the people who work on, use, or interact with the railway. It also advises the government in ensuring Highways England carries out its investment programme on England\u2019s strategic road network effectively.<\/p>\n<p>The reappointment provides continuity of leadership as the government considers the recommendations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/shaw-report-into-network-rail\">Shaw report<\/a> on the longer term future, shape and financing of Network Rail and completes further work on its implementation.<\/p>\n<p>Emeritus Professor of Transport and Infrastructure at Imperial College, London, Stephen has been chair of the <abbr title=\"Office of Rail and Road\">ORR<\/abbr> since January 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A strong, independent regulator is essential in maintaining the safe and smooth running of the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u2019s transport network. I am confident that Professor Glaister will continue to bring leadership to the <abbr title=\"Office of Rail and Road\">ORR<\/abbr> as we consider the broader shape and structure of the rail industry and ensure Highways England delivers efficiently on its roads programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Stephen\u2019s wealth of experience will ensure that <abbr title=\"Office of Rail and Road\">ORR<\/abbr> continues to protect the interests of rail and road users, delivering value for money for taxpayers and for funders.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stephen Glaister said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\"><abbr title=\"Office of Rail and Road\">ORR<\/abbr> has made great strides this year in progressing the safety, value and performance of railways and roads, for today and for the future. In my first 6 months I have also been hugely impressed by the calibre and commitment of the <abbr title=\"Office of Rail and Road\">ORR<\/abbr>\u2019s staff. I am very pleased to be asked to extend my term for a further year which I feel is an acknowledgement of the progress we are making.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stephen\u2019s appointment will run until 31 December 2017.
