{"id":71953,"date":"2016-07-05T12:16:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-05T12:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=21bd46bda35ff3b90504dde41b947c3d"},"modified":"2016-07-05T12:16:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-05T12:16:00","slug":"press-release-dft-launches-60-million-competition-to-support-sustainable-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=71953","title":{"rendered":"Press release: DfT launches \u00a360 million competition to support sustainable travel"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Walking and cycling in local communities will be boosted by a \u00a360 million government competition launched today (5 July 2016).<\/p>\n<p>Councils across England are being asked to bid for a share of the Department for Transport\u2019s green <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/access-fund-for-sustainable-travel-application-form\">Sustainable Travel Access Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The fund has been launched to encourage councils to offer sustainable transport initiatives which can improve access to jobs, skills, training and education.<\/p>\n<p>The cash, which will support projects over 3 years from 2017 to 2020, is part of a wider government fund of over \u00a3300 million to boost walking and cycling during the current parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Councils are being encouraged to look at opportunities to work together on devising schemes. The successful authorities will be asked to contribute 10% of their scheme costs.<\/p>\n<p>They are encouraged to work alongside Local Enterprise Partnerships (<abbr title=\"Local Enterprise Partnerships\">LEPs<\/abbr>), many of whom will be including sustainable transport measures, including walking and cycling investment, proposals to be submitted next month in a further round of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/growth-deals-initial-guidance-for-local-enterprise-partnerships\">Growth Deals<\/a> where up to \u00a31.8 billion will be available.<\/p>\n<p>Cycling and walking Minister Robert Goodwill said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Green sustainable transport schemes cut congestion, improve air quality and can make it easier for people to get around more efficiently and effectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We are investing over \u00a3300 million to support cycling and walking schemes in this parliament, and this new scheme is aimed at kick-starting innovative and sustainable council projects.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The results of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/21m-green-transport-funding-to-support-job-creation-and-clean-up-air-quality\">earlier competition<\/a> were announced in May, with 23 local councils or combined authority projects sharing in \u00a320.6 million of government cash to support a total of nearly \u00a333.4 million worth of new projects up and down England, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Let\u2019s Get to Work in Greater Manchester<\/li>\n<li>Connecting Hampshire to Grow Rural Prosperity<\/li>\n<li>Go Smarter across the north-east<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The closing date for councils to bid for a share of the new fund is Friday 9 September.
