{"id":72045,"date":"2016-07-06T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=b466239d2730ee319e406cb63e0a6370"},"modified":"2016-07-06T23:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-06T23:00:00","slug":"news-story-jmt-report-and-flyer-published","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=72045","title":{"rendered":"News story: JMT report and flyer published"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The report into MAIB\u2019s investigation of the capsize and foundering of the fishing vessel JMT (M99) on 9 July 2015 is now published.<\/p>\n<p>The report contains details of what happened and the subsequent actions taken, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/maib-reports\/capsize-and-sinking-of-scallop-dredger-jmt-with-loss-of-2-lives\">read more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/safety-lessons-stability-of-small-fishing-vessels\">safety flyer<\/a> for the fishing industry summarising the accident and detailing the safety lessons learned has also been produced.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"statement-from-the-chief-inspector-of-marine-accidents\">Statement from the Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents<\/h3>\n<p>The loss of <abbr title=\"fishing vessel\">FV<\/abbr> JMT is one of many fatal accidents involving small fishing vessels that have capsized because their crews did not understand the fundamental principles of stability.<\/p>\n<p>However, in common with nearly all fishing vessels &lt;15m, <abbr title=\"fishing vessel\">FV<\/abbr> JMT had not been provided with any stability information that might have given its crew some indicators on how to operate the boat safely.<\/p>\n<p>The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has confirmed its commitment to introducing stability criteria for new fishing vessels &lt;15m. This is a welcome initiative that will ultimately improve fishing safety over time but will have no impact on the safety of the UK\u2019s existing small fishing vessel fleet for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulties of providing existing small fishing vessels with comprehensive stability criteria are understood.
