{"id":72251,"date":"2016-07-12T12:22:41","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T12:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=847cff49b1a2ebff5a5e2ca0d052f139"},"modified":"2016-07-12T12:22:41","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T12:22:41","slug":"news-story-raising-the-standard-of-mot-testing-to-improve-road-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=72251","title":{"rendered":"News story: Raising the standard of MOT testing to improve road safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (<abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>) is introducing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an industry-recognised qualification for new MOT testers and managers<\/li>\n<li>annual training and assessments for the existing 58,000 MOT testers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"carrying-out-mots-to-the-right-standard\">Carrying out MOTs to the right standard<\/h2>\n<p>Around 27 million car MOTs are carried out in Great Britain each year.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority are done to the right standard, but <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> data shows that some errors are made. The new qualification and training process should help to reduce them.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mot-qualification\">MOT qualification<\/h3>\n<p>From September 2016, new MOT testers will need a nationally-recognised qualification.<\/p>\n<p>To be eligible for the qualification, they\u2019ll already need to have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a technical qualification, eg a Vehicle Technician, Vehicle Maintenance and Repair NVQ<\/li>\n<li>at least 4 years of experience in the motor trade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They\u2019ll then need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>successfully complete an MOT tester qualification course<\/li>\n<li>pass an MOT demonstration test with a <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> examiner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new qualification offers more people the opportunity to develop their skills and enter a career in MOT testing, helping to boost the industry.<\/p>\n<div class=\"call-to-action\">\n<p>Find out how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/become-an-mot-tester\">become an MOT tester<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"annual-training-and-assessments\">Annual training and assessments<\/h3>\n<p>MOT testers will also have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/mot-training\">take training and pass an assessment<\/a> every year to continue carrying out MOTs.<\/p>\n<p>The training will focus on topics which <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> data shows testers are most likely to get wrong.<\/p>\n<p>It means that consumers can be more confident that their MOT result is right, and that any vehicle faults are correctly identified. This helps protect everyone from unsafe vehicles.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"regularly-assessing-the-standard\">Regularly assessing the standard<\/h2>\n<p>Transport Minister, Lord Ahmad, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>MOT testers do an excellent and essential job ensuring that vehicles are fit to be driven on our roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We want all workers to be proud of their profession and drivers to be sure they are getting the right test result. We are introducing this new qualification and training and assessment regime to further boost the reputation of the profession.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>\u2019s Chief Executive, Gareth Llewellyn, added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Checking your vehicle is safe to drive is one of our top priorities. Ensuring the quality of MOT testing will ensure customers can be confident their vehicle will be tested in a highly professional manner.<\/p>\n<p>The new qualification as well as the annual training and assessment will continue to build on the professional reputation of the MOT industry.
