{"id":72998,"date":"2016-08-04T12:59:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-04T12:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=c8cbf6fa326d2c805f2e1247c08f5dea"},"modified":"2017-02-16T15:03:09","modified_gmt":"2017-02-16T15:03:09","slug":"news-story-new-ministers-for-life-sciences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=72998","title":{"rendered":"News story: New ministers for life sciences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Updated:<\/em> Updated to reflect the new ministerial team.<\/p>\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Office for Life Sciences (<abbr title=\"Office for Life Sciences\">OLS<\/abbr>) will continue to be a joint unit across the Department of Health (<abbr title=\"Department of Health\">DH<\/abbr>) and the newly formed Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (<abbr title=\"Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy\">BEIS<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"new-ministers\">New ministers<\/h2>\n<p>Sector responsibilities will be split across ministers in both departments.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"department-of-health\">Department of Health<\/h3>\n<p>In the Department of Health, 2 ministers will be jointly responsible for life sciences.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"lord-oshaughnessy-parliamentary-under-secretary-of-state-for-health\">Lord O\u2019Shaughnessy, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Health<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/lord-oshaughnessy\">Lord O\u2019Shaughnessy<\/a> will lead on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the <abbr title=\"Department of Health\">DH<\/abbr> life science industrial strategy<\/li>\n<li>the Accelerated Access Review<\/li>\n<li>making a success of leaving the European Union<\/li>\n<li>the biopharmaceutical and medical technology industry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 id=\"nicola-blackwood-parliamentary-under-secretary-of-state-for-public-health-and-innovation\">Nicola Blackwood, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health and Innovation<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/nicola-blackwood\">Nicola Blackwood<\/a> will lead on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>genomics<\/li>\n<li>data and digital health<\/li>\n<li>emerging health technologies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"department-for-business-energy-and-industrial-strategy\">Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy<\/h3>\n<h4 id=\"lord-prior-of-brampton-parliamentary-under-secretary-of-state\">Lord Prior of Brampton, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State<\/h4>\n<p>Within <abbr title=\"Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy\">BEIS<\/abbr>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/david-prior\">Lord Prior<\/a> will be responsible for the <abbr title=\"Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy\">BEIS<\/abbr> life science industrial strategy. He will work with the <abbr title=\"Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy\">BEIS<\/abbr> Secretary of State, Greg Clark, to oversee the UK\u2019s drive to lead the world in the new age of global science.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"life-sciences-organisation-lso\">Life Sciences Organisation (<abbr title=\"Life Sciences Organisation\">LSO<\/abbr>)<\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"greg-hands-minister-of-state-for-trade-and-investment\">Greg Hands, Minister of State for Trade and Investment<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/greg-hands\">Greg Hands<\/a> will lead on high value export and investment campaigns on behalf of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/ukti-life-sciences-organisation\">Life Sciences Organisation (<abbr title=\"Life Sciences Organisation\">LSO<\/abbr>)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"working-together\">Working together<\/h2>\n<p>As our ministerial support spans both departments, it will enable the life science agenda to be fully integrated into the priorities for both <abbr title=\"Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy\">BEIS<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"Department of Health\">DH<\/abbr>, from industrial strategy to the uptake of innovation.<\/p>\n<p>The life science sector will continue to be supported by the Office for Life Sciences and its director, Nicole Mather. We\u2019ll continue to work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for the sector. We\u2019ll work closely with the new Department for International Trade and Department for Exiting the European Union.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ukeu-steering-group\">UK\/EU steering group<\/h2>\n<p>A UK\/EU steering group has been set up to oversee and manage a programme of work to inform transition. This group, aligned with the Ministerial Industry Strategy Group, is gathering views from a variety of stakeholders across the sector. The group will provide recommendations and considerations for how the UK can seize the opportunity to define for the sector a new relationship with the EU.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"future-of-the-sector\">Future of the sector<\/h2>\n<p>New ministers are excited to have the opportunity to support and influence the further growth of such a strong and productive life science environment.
