{"id":73031,"date":"2016-08-05T13:04:02","date_gmt":"2016-08-05T13:04:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=e504f95b57c1ab69a68339d571c06ee7"},"modified":"2016-08-05T13:04:02","modified_gmt":"2016-08-05T13:04:02","slug":"news-story-reducing-animal-use-in-research-apply-for-innovation-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=73031","title":{"rendered":"News story: Reducing animal use in research: apply for innovation funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Innovative businesses and academics can apply for contracts to come up with new ways of minimising the use of animals in research.<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nc3rs.org.uk\/\">National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research<\/a> (NC3Rs), through its <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crackit.org.uk\/home\">CRACK IT<\/a> programme, is inviting small or medium enterprises (SMEs) to find solutions to a series of challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Through the SBRI programme, successful applicants will receive a contract to develop their innovation. Depending on the challenge, contracts of up to \u00a31 million over 3 years are available.<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 challenges include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>improving implantation rates of early-stage embryos<\/li>\n<li>developing reliable predictions for chemical toxicity<\/li>\n<li>establishing a 3D retinal cell model for use in new ophthalmology treatments<\/li>\n<li>developing an in vitro model to recapitulate the human osteoarthritic joint<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are 2 types of competition:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"two-phase-challenges\">Two-phase challenges<\/h3>\n<p>These will include proof-of-concept studies for up to 6 months. At the end of phase 1, we will invite candidates to apply for phase 2 and attend a Dragons\u2019 Den-style interview.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"single-phase-challenges\">Single-phase challenges<\/h3>\n<p>These challenges focus on the validation of new technologies, prototypes and methods that are closer to market. We will invite the most promising candidates to a Dragons\u2019 Den-style interview.<\/p>\n<p>NC3Rs is a UK-based scientific organisation. Its aim is to find ways of replacing, refining and reducing the use of animals in research and testing. NC3Rs is funding this competition with support from Innovate UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/sbri-the-small-business-research-initiative\">Small Business Research Initiative<\/a> (SBRI). Multinational pharmaceutical, chemical and consumer product companies are also sponsoring the competition.
