{"id":73343,"date":"2016-08-18T11:00:53","date_gmt":"2016-08-18T11:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=7dde2dc195ac7e3746b4e55eb7086856"},"modified":"2016-08-18T11:00:53","modified_gmt":"2016-08-18T11:00:53","slug":"news-story-synthetic-environment-tower-community-of-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=73343","title":{"rendered":"News story: Synthetic Environment Tower Community of Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (<abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr>) is looking to expand its Synthetic Environment Tower of Excellence (<abbr title=\"Synthetic Environment Tower of Excellence\">SE Tower<\/abbr>) Community of Practice (<abbr title=\"Community of Practice\">COP<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>Since 2004, the <abbr title=\"Synthetic Environment Tower of Excellence\">SE Tower<\/abbr> has provided a mechanism for the Ministry of Defence (<abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr>), industry and academia to work together on areas of research in simulation and synthetic environments. The <abbr title=\"Synthetic Environment Tower of Excellence\">SE Tower<\/abbr> aims to develop UK defence capability in this area, and annually seeks to refresh its relationships with the supplier community by opening the <abbr title=\"Community of Practice\">COP<\/abbr> to new members.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 38 members joined, benefitting from twice-yearly Information Exchange Events (<abbr title=\"Information Exchange Events\">IEE<\/abbr>). The next event is planned for November 2016 where <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr> will once again be looking at ways to increase the mutual understanding and co-operation between the <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr> and supplier base who work in the area of simulation and synthetic environments.  Joining the <abbr title=\"Community of Practice\">COP<\/abbr> is a way to encourage and enable members to collaborate in research and exploitation activities for UK defence purposes, independent of contracted research.<\/p>\n<p>Bharat Patel, the <abbr title=\"Synthetic Environment Tower of Excellence\">SE Tower<\/abbr> Chair, <abbr title=\"Defence Science and Technology Laboratory\">Dstl<\/abbr> says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">By underpinning the <abbr title=\"Synthetic Environment Tower of Excellence\">SE Tower<\/abbr> with a Community of Practice, we gain a deeper understanding of simulation and synthetic environment capabilities and how these capabilities can be used by <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr>. For suppliers it is an opportunity to improve their understanding of how they can help <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr> tackle its future challenges, and to build teams to conduct research and development.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Recently, the <abbr title=\"Community of Practice\">COP<\/abbr> members successfully provided key input into the translation of strategic user needs into research requirements as part of <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr>\u2019s Scientific Capability Review. The <abbr title=\"Community of Practice\">COP<\/abbr> was also successfully utilised to inject unique ideas or innovative approaches in the Architectures, Interoperability and Management of Simulations research task within the <abbr title=\"Synthetic Environment Tower of Excellence\">SE Tower<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Simulation and synthetic environments are used by <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr> in a variety of ways, from supporting training, concept development and experimentation, to acquisition, evaluation and mission preparation.<\/p>\n<p>The application to the <abbr title=\"Synthetic Environment Tower of Excellence\">SE Tower<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Community of Practice\">COP<\/abbr> is now open. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/dstl-synthetic-environment-tower-of-excellence-se-tower\">The membership questionnaire and more information is now available<\/a>.
