{"id":73519,"date":"2016-08-25T09:52:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-25T09:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=a55d60e666faff7e276091751f42e906"},"modified":"2016-08-25T09:52:00","modified_gmt":"2016-08-25T09:52:00","slug":"press-release-gcse-results-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=73519","title":{"rendered":"Press release: GCSE results day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>School Standards Minister Nick Gibb said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The hard work and determination of hundreds of thousands of 16-year-olds will be rewarded today as they collect their <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr> results; qualifications that are the gateway to the next stage of their education.<\/p>\n<p>We want to make our country a place where there is no limit on anyone\u2019s ambition or what they can achieve &#8211; that\u2019s why we are working to ensure there are even more high-quality schools in every part of the country.<\/p>\n<p>And I am pleased to see that there are more <abbr title=\"General Certificates of Secondary Education\">GCSEs<\/abbr> being taken in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/english-baccalaureate-ebacc\/english-baccalaureate-ebacc#ebacc-subjects\">core academic subjects<\/a>, those that give students a wider range of opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">And for those 17-year-olds who have struggled to achieve good grades in maths, we are seeing 4,000 more successful retakes of those exams, delivering better prospects for every one of those young people.\u200e<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Today\u2019s (25 August 2016) <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr> results show:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>entries to <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and maths\">STEM<\/abbr> subjects by students aged 16 have increased by 6.4% compared to 2015. The government is committed to making Britain the best place in the world to study <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and maths\">STEM<\/abbr> subjects &#8211; helping to boost the UK economy in the long term<\/li>\n<li>there has been a significant increase in the number of entries by students studying <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr> computer science, from 35,414 in 2015 to 62,454 in 2016. The number of girls studying computer science has more than doubled since last year<\/li>\n<li>there has been a 3.4% increase in the overall entries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/english-baccalaureate-ebacc\/english-baccalaureate-ebacc#ebacc-subjects\"><abbr title=\"English Baccalaureate\">EBacc<\/abbr> subjects<\/a> for students aged 16, including rises in biology, chemistry, physics, core science, additional science, geography, history and computing<\/li>\n<li>the number of entries to the religious studies <abbr title=\"General Certificate of Secondary Education\">GCSE<\/abbr> is the highest since 2002. This shows that schools and students value the contribution that <abbr title=\"religious studies\">RS<\/abbr> can bring to a broad and rounded education<\/li>\n<li>as a result of the government\u2019s early entry rule, where only the first exam entry counts towards <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk\/\">performance tables<\/a>, the number of under 16s being entered for <abbr title=\"General Certificates of Secondary Education\">GCSEs<\/abbr> continues to drop. Entries are down by 28% year on year, so more students are being entered when they have been fully prepared for their examinations<\/li>\n<li>this summer thousands more 17-year-olds successfully resat their maths and English <abbr title=\"General Certificates of Secondary Education\">GCSEs<\/abbr> thanks to colleges and schools across England. 51,200 maths exams sat by students aged 17 and over were graded A* to C &#8211; up from 30,000 in 2012.
