{"id":73743,"date":"2016-09-02T09:03:28","date_gmt":"2016-09-02T09:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=7b62527187aaed114da3412119225190"},"modified":"2016-09-02T09:03:28","modified_gmt":"2016-09-02T09:03:28","slug":"news-story-safety-at-sellafield-is-gold-standard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=73743","title":{"rendered":"News story: Safety at Sellafield is gold standard"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Safety at Sellafield nuclear site, in west Cumbria, is gold standard, according to the UK\u2019s most prestigious health and safety awards.<\/p>\n<p>The site recorded one of its best-ever performances in the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rospa.com\/awards\">Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) awards<\/a>, scooping 9 golds and 1 silver.<\/p>\n<p>Now in their 60th year, internationally-recognised RoSPA awards are the UK\u2019s most sought after safety awards.<\/p>\n<p>4 of Sellafield Ltd\u2019s gold medals were won in the highest hazard areas of the site \u2013 the legacy ponds and silos.<\/p>\n<p>Pete Lutwyche, NDA\u2019s Chief Operating Officer, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The awards are a clear demonstration of the importance placed upon safety by everyone involved in the complex mission to clean up Sellafield.<\/p>\n<p>This is a great accolade to the people who work at the nuclear site; each one instrumental in ensuring that the site is safe whilst progressing hazard reduction and decommissioning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">These awards are independently awarded for the highest standards of health and safety performance and I am proud to see Sellafield Ltd recognised alongside the very best organisations.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Euan Hutton, Sellafield Ltd\u2019s Environment, Health, Safety and Quality Director, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The awards underline the company\u2019s unwavering commitment to the safety of its workforce and the community.<\/p>\n<p>Sellafield is one of the world\u2019s most hazardous nuclear sites, but we are also one of the safest \u2013 and that does not come about by chance,<\/p>\n<p>Winning 10 RoSPA awards is a fantastic achievement given the challenges our workforce face every day and the huge range of activities they undertake.<\/p>\n<p>Achieving such high safety standards in challenging circumstances is down to the hard work and dedication of our workforce.<\/p>\n<p>These awards are proof of how seriously we take our responsibility to manage the clean-up of the UK\u2019s nuclear legacy safely and securely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">However, we are never complacent \u2013 we constantly strive to improve and we always seek opportunities to push ourselves further.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sellafield Ltd was awarded alongside some of the highest safety performing organisations from around the world, including many of the company\u2019s contractors.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hutton added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Our contracting community make up a large part of the workforce at Sellafield and I\u2019m pleased that their commitment to safe working has been recognised through the many awards they have achieved.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The 10 RoSPA awards were presented to the following areas of Sellafield Ltd:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sellafield Ltd<\/li>\n<li>First Generation Magnox Storage Pond<\/li>\n<li>Pile Fuel Storage Pond<\/li>\n<li>Magnox Swarf Storage Silo<\/li>\n<li>Pile Fuel Cladding Silo<\/li>\n<li>Site Remediation and Decommissioning Projects<\/li>\n<li>Environmental Health Safety &amp;
