Also in attendance were representatives from the British Embassy, British Forces Germany and local dignitaries. The service was organised by the <abbr title=\"Ministry of Defence\">MOD<\/abbr>\u2019s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (<abbr title=\"Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre\">JCCC<\/abbr>), part of Defence Business Services (<abbr title=\"Defence Business Services\">DBS<\/abbr>) and it included a new headstone bearing <abbr title=\"Sergeant\">Sgt<\/abbr> Pulman\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sgt Pulman\u2019s headstone, Crown Copyright, All rights reserved\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/56290\/20160913-Sgt_Pulman_s_headstone-O.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption><abbr title=\"Sergeant\">Sgt<\/abbr> Pulman\u2019s headstone, Crown Copyright, All rights reserved<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr title=\"Sergeant\">Sgt<\/abbr> Pulman was just 18 years old when he was killed during a fierce night fighter attack on 30 January 1944. He was the tail gunner on board Lancaster Bomber EE173 and part of 207 Squadron Royal Air Force, when it was brought down. All of the other crew members successfully bailed out of the aircraft but were then taken as prisoners of war.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"World War 2 Lancaster Bomber in flight, Crown Copyright, All rights reserved\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/56291\/Lancaster_Bomber.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>World War 2 Lancaster Bomber in flight, Crown Copyright, All rights reserved<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Born on 31 May 1924 in Liverpool, <abbr title=\"Sergeant\">Sgt<\/abbr> Pulman was the younger son of George and Evelyn Pulman. He joined the <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> on 5 February 1943 at 18 and lived in Dane Street, Walton.<\/p>\n<p>In December 1970, an <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> Lancaster was salvaged from Lake Krumme in the American sector of Berlin. Its engine numbers matched those of Lancaster EE173. The evidence linking human remains found nearby and the aircraft were not considered strong enough at the time, and the remains buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery as those of an \u2018unknown airman\u2019. Evidence relating to the incident has now been examined, and with the help of the Air Historical Branch and research conducted by <abbr title=\"Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre\">JCCC<\/abbr>, it has been possible to identify the remains as those of <abbr title=\"Sergeant\">Sgt<\/abbr> Pulman.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy Tartt, niece of <abbr title=\"Sergeant\">Sgt<\/abbr> Arthur Pulman stated how overwhelmed her family were by the events although it was tinged with sadness that her brother, also named Arthur who had died earlier this year, was not alive to see the final resting place of their uncle commemorated.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Pulman, <abbr title=\"Sergeant\">Sgt<\/abbr> Pulman\u2019s cousin said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The family is pleased that Arthur\u2019s grave has been found and rededicated in such a peaceful cemetery.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Reverend (Wing Commander) Ashley Mitchell <abbr title=\"Royal Air Force\">RAF<\/abbr> said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Today\u2019s service reminds us of the great sacrifice that young airman made during World War 2. I\u2019m honoured to be able to conduct this service and dedicate the grave to <abbr title=\"Sergeant\">Sgt<\/abbr> Arthur Pulman.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany, Crown Copyright, All rights reserved\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/56289\/20160913-Rheinberg_War_Cemetery__Germany-O.jpg\"><\/div><figcaption>Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany, Crown Copyright, All rights reserved<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Family members of <abbr title=\"Sergeant\">Sgt<\/abbr> Pulman who were unable to travel had been involved throughout the preparation and sent a wreath which was laid by Louise Dorr, from the <abbr title=\"Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre\">JCCC<\/abbr> on their behalf.
