{"id":74409,"date":"2016-09-23T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2016-09-23T09:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=a9e6e00562c58d00756c7aae568c75c5"},"modified":"2016-09-23T09:00:13","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T09:00:13","slug":"press-release-uk-companies-invest-record-133bn-in-intangible-assets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=74409","title":{"rendered":"Press release: UK companies invest record \u00a3133bn in intangible assets"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>UK companies are increasingly spending more on know-how and ideas, with research commissioned by the UK Intellectual Property Office showing that intangible asset investment continues to outstrip traditional \u201cbricks and mortar\u201d investment.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014 intangible investment, which includes spending on <abbr title=\"Research and Development\">R&amp;D<\/abbr>, software, and design, hit \u00a3133 billion \u2013 9% higher than traditional \u201ctangible\u201d investment such as such as property, machinery and IT.<\/p>\n<p>Since the turn of the century intangible investment by organisations has increased by \u00a345 billion \u2013 highlighting the UK\u2019s important role in the global \u201cknowledge economy\u201d. Investment in tangible assets also rose by nearly 38% between 2011 and 2014 &#8211; from \u00a387.9 billion to \u00a3121 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The report also highlights the importance of manufacturing and financial services to the UK\u2019s innovation economy. These two industries alone account for just 20% of total hours worked but are responsible for 58% of intangible investment.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014 more than half of intangible investments (53%) were protected by Intellectual Property Rights (<abbr title=\"Intellectual Property Rights\">IPRs<\/abbr>) &#8211; a 3% increase from 2011. Of these assets:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>25% were protected by copyright<\/li>\n<li>11% were protected by trade marks<\/li>\n<li>11% were protected by design rights<\/li>\n<li>6% were protected by patents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Innovation is a major element of the government\u2019s plan to help UK companies drive future economic growth up and down the country, and <abbr title=\"Intellectual Property\">IP<\/abbr> rights play an increasingly important role in delivering this.<\/p>\n<p>Baroness Neville-Rolfe, Minister of State for Energy and Intellectual Property, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The UK has an impressive track record when it comes to innovation and creativity. Investment in intangible assets like research and patents helps businesses grow &#8211; which is why the UK has a strong system in place to protect their <abbr title=\"Intellectual Property\">IP<\/abbr> rights, and encourage further investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Our intellectual property regime has helped create an environment in which innovators and creators can prosper knowing full well that their hard work will be rewarded and rigorously protected.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Tony Rollins, President of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Investment in the protection of intellectual property is a vital driver of economic growth: it helps to maximise profits which fund further research and development into new ideas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\"><abbr title=\"Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys\">CIPA<\/abbr> is proud of its excellent relationship with government and innovative business.
