{"id":74442,"date":"2016-09-25T23:15:02","date_gmt":"2016-09-25T23:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=4fcd1b7ed04bc9506bb5a5a4386105e9"},"modified":"2016-09-25T23:15:02","modified_gmt":"2016-09-25T23:15:02","slug":"news-story-new-think-campaign-to-improve-cyclists-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=74442","title":{"rendered":"News story: New THINK! campaign to improve cyclists\u2019 safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Cyclists in London and Manchester are being encouraged to \u2018hang back\u2019 from lorries in a <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/think.direct.gov.uk\/cycling.html\">safety campaign<\/a> launched today (26 September 2016) by Road Safety Minister Andrew Jones to reduce the number of deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Riding a bike is very safe, and is greener, healthier and more sustainable than other forms of transport but cutting the number of accidents is our top priority.<\/p>\n<p>The THINK! campaign has been developed after statistics showed last year a fifth of crashes where cyclists were killed involved <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicles\">HGVs<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>A large proportion of deaths happen when a cyclist is at the front left of the truck, and almost a third of all crashes between cyclists and <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicles\">HGVs<\/abbr> happen when the lorry is turning left.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Minister Andrew Jones said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are investing \u00a3300 million over the next 4 years to help make Britain a cycling nation.<\/p>\n<p>Reducing the number of cyclists killed on our roads is a key priority. Since 2010 the number has decreased to its lowest level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This campaign will raise awareness amongst urban cyclists and help make our roads safer for those on 2 wheels.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The campaign film entitled \u2018Things you shouldn\u2019t get caught between\u2019, as well as posters, carry the message: \u2018Don\u2019t get caught between a lorry and a left turn. Hang back\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m7lBvN80JaQ\">THINK! Things you shouldn\u2019t get caught between<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign will also target <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicles\">HGV<\/abbr> drivers through partnership activity with the Freight Transport Association (<abbr title=\"Freight Transport Association\">FTA<\/abbr>) and will be supported by tips for car drivers in general to raise awareness of cycle safety on the roads.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Snelling, Freight Transport Association Head of National and Regional Policy, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We need to make our busy urban roads as safe as possible for all users and it\u2019s important that both <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicles\">HGV<\/abbr> drivers and cyclists understand the risks created by sharing the limited road space and know what steps they can take to minimise them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This Department for Transport (<abbr title=\"Department for Transport\">DfT<\/abbr>) campaign highlights one of the key danger zones \u2013 the blind spot at the front left of a <abbr title=\"heavy goods vehicles\">HGV<\/abbr>.
