Bruce started his 5-year term on 1 October 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Confirming the appointment, Caroline Nokes said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">I am delighted to appoint Bruce Calderwood to the Social Security Advisory Committee. Bruce\u2019s considerable experience and expertise means that he will be a strong addition to the committee\u2019s membership.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Paul Gray, <abbr title=\"Social Security Advisory Committee\">SSAC<\/abbr> Chair, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Bruce is a very welcome addition to the committee. He has a strong background in social policy and operational issues, and will bring excellent insight to our work on the challenges that many disabled people \u2013 particularly those with mental health conditions \u2013 face in securing and retaining employment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"current-business-interests\">Current business interests<\/h2>\n<p>Bruce Calderwood:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>is a trustee of Avenues Group, a charity providing services for people with complex needs<\/li>\n<li>chairs <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cqc.org.uk\/\">Care Quality Commission<\/a> (CQC) inspections of mental health trusts<\/li>\n<li>is an instructor in Mental Health First Aid for the Armed Forces Community<\/li>\n<li>is a member of the strategic advisory panel to Dimensions \u2013 a major service provider to people with learning disabilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"about-the-committee\">About the committee<\/h2>\n<p>The Social Security Advisory Committee is an independent statutory body established in 1980. It provides advice to the Secretary of State on proposals for the amendment of secondary legislation and on general social security matters.<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/publicappointmentscommissioner.independent.gov.uk\/\">Commissioner for Public Appointments<\/a> regulates all appointments made by the Secretary of State to <abbr title=\"Social Security Advisory Committee\">SSAC<\/abbr>. All such appointments are made in accordance with the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/publicappointmentscommissioner.independent.gov.uk\/the-code-of-practice\/\">Code of Practice<\/a> published by the commissioner. The code is based on 3 core principles \u2013 merit, openness and fairness.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Social Security Advisory Committee\">SSAC<\/abbr> members receive a daily fee of \u00a3256.80, for a time commitment of 2 to 3 days a month.
