{"id":74985,"date":"2016-10-13T13:09:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-13T13:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=8036a2327d21d0c3f1ecfdbbaade67c3"},"modified":"2016-10-13T13:09:00","modified_gmt":"2016-10-13T13:09:00","slug":"news-story-35-million-boost-for-ultra-low-emission-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=74985","title":{"rendered":"News story: \u00a335 million boost for ultra low emission vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>A major \u00a335 million package to boost the uptake of ultra-low emission cars and scooters was unveiled by Transport Minister John Hayes today (13 October 2016).<\/p>\n<p>The fresh funding commitment will see thousands more electric vehicle chargepoints installed on streets and at workplaces across the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> \u2013 after the number of new ultra low emission vehicles registered rose by 250% in just 2 years.<\/p>\n<p>The government is also buying 2 brand new Nissan LEAF electric cars for the Government Car Service \u2013 on top of 4 that are already in use.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OLEV public and private award.\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/57141\/OLEV_2_web.jpg\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The vehicles are built at the Nissan motor manufacturing plant in Sunderland &#8211; a symbol of our world-leading automotive industry which the government is committed to supporting.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement is part of the government\u2019s plans to improve air quality, and it comes as <abbr title=\"Department for Environment, Food &amp; Rural Affairs\">Defra<\/abbr> launch a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/implementation-of-clean-air-zones-in-england\">consultation on introducing clean air zones in Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Derby and Southampton by 2020<\/a> &#8211; delivering on the government\u2019s commitment to create cleaner air and reduce emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Minister John Hayes said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>No matter what mode of transport you need &#8211; a scooter to get to work, a car or a van to run your business &#8211; we are here to help you do it with zero emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The number of ultra-low emission vehicles on our roads are at record levels and new registrations have risen by 250% in just over 2 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We are committing \u00a335 million to help install new chargepoints and offer new grants as we aim for nearly all cars and vans on our roads to be zero emission by 2050.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The funding announced today includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>next steps of a \u00a320 million competition that will help councils roll out chargepoints for ultra-low emission taxis<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>up to \u00a310 million funding for chargepoints outside workplaces and homes where there is no off-street parking<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>launch of an initial \u00a33.75 million scheme to encourage uptake of zero emission motorcycles and scooters<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>\u00a32 million awarded to public and private sector organisations to deploy hydrogen fuel cell vehicles<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OLEV taxi chargepoint.\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/57142\/OLEV_web.jpg\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The funding is being delivered as part of the government\u2019s commitment to invest \u00a3600 million in ultra-low emission vehicles by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The pioneering \u00a320 million pot to encourage the uptake of ultra-low emission taxis is the first of its kind, and will give councils the opportunity to apply for funds to install chargepoints to be used by local taxi fleets.<\/p>\n<p>A \u00a37.5 million workplace charging scheme, due to be launched this autumn, will be open to eligible private and public sector workplaces in the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> to support the installation of charging infrastructure for their staff and fleet use.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of electric car owners charge their vehicles at home \u2013 which is not always practical for people without driveways. A further \u00a32.5 million is being made available to councils who commit to installing chargepoints on streets near homes without private off-street parking.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, an initial \u00a33.75 million is being made available for motorcycle and scooter riders who want to want to go green, providing them with up to 20% off the cost of an electric motorcycle or scooter. Buyers will be able to claim a maximum discount of \u00a31,500.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image embedded\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OLEV scooters\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/image_data\/file\/57148\/OLEV_4.jpg\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>We are also revealing the winners of our hydrogen fuel cell vehicles fleet competition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/hydrogen-fuel-cell-vehicles-funding-fleets-to-be-early-adopters\">Fourteen public and private sector fleets from around the country<\/a> \u2013 city councils, emergency authorities, car hire firms and the Science Museum amongst them &#8211; will receive a share of \u00a32 million for a total of 50 hydrogen-fuelled cars and vans, more than doubling the number of these types of vehicles on <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n<p>The government has already taken great strides in getting organisations around the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> to switch to zero emissions vehicles.
