{"id":75654,"date":"2016-11-02T17:01:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-02T17:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=0f970c37a45730b0d79b7e63b935d8be"},"modified":"2016-11-02T17:01:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-02T17:01:00","slug":"news-story-uk-pledges-new-support-for-colombian-peace-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=75654","title":{"rendered":"News story: UK pledges new support for Colombian peace process"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The UK will increase its contribution to prosperity programmes in Colombia by up to \u00a325 million, supporting economic development and opening up investment and export opportunities worth in the region of \u00a36 billion to the UK economy.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a further \u00a37.5 million from the government\u2019s Conflict, Security and Stability Fund (CSSF) will be allocated to support the Colombian peace process, with \u00a32.5 million dedicated specifically to support demining through the United Nations Trust Fund. Demining is crucial for releasing land into productive use and to clear up the remains of conflict.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister announced the increased funding following her meeting with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos at 10 Downing Street. President Santos, winner of the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize, is in London on the second day of an official State Visit to the UK, the first ever by a Colombian President.<\/p>\n<p>The prosperity funding will contribute to economic growth in Colombia, and benefit the UK with around \u00a36 billion of opportunities for British businesses to support infrastructure projects in Colombia\u2019s cities, improve the regulation and rehabilitation of Colombia\u2019s railways, and increase agricultural exports and insurance.<\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Secretary hosted the Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to discuss the new commitment as well as the UK\u2019s enduring relationship with Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The UK has long been a supporter of Colombia and President Santos\u2019s efforts to bring peace to his country. These additional funds will unlock economic opportunities in the parts of Colombia that have been most affected by poverty and conflict, which in turn will benefit the UK through increased business opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">A sustainable peace process is the basis of Colombia\u2019s future prosperity and stability. A strong, stable and prosperous Colombia will benefit the UK and the world.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Foreign Secretary also joined President Santos for a private tour of the Churchill War Rooms on King Charles Street, which included visiting the Cabinet Room and the Map Room.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"notes-for-editors\">Notes for editors<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>More than 3 million people in some of Colombia\u2019s poorest regions are expected to benefit from the new prosperity funding. The prosperity programming aims to tackle the underlying barriers to economic growth by developing better cities, increasing agricultural competitiveness, combating corruption and improving infrastructure to link urban and rural areas<\/li>\n<li>Since the launch  of the government\u2019s Conflict Security and Stability Fund (CSSF) in 2015, the UK has supported peace-building, security and justice in Colombia. \u00a31.5 million of the CSSF uplift will go toward the Organisation of American States Colombian Peace mission, to increase monitoring of the peace process and liaison with local communities<\/li>\n<li>Colombia is one of the most mine-affected countries in the world. There have been 11,479 victims since 1990 including 74 in 2016 alone. The Government of Colombia has made demining one of its top priorities, launching the Global Demining Initiative in April 2016.
