These include non-communicable diseases, mental health, tobacco control, road safety, surgery, and health and applied social or economic research.<\/p>\n<p>The funding is available for successful universities looking to expand their existing global health work, or for new entrants to the field.<\/p>\n<p>Applications are invited for 2 schemes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"National Institute for Health Research\">NIHR<\/abbr> global health research units: universities and research institutes with an existing track-record of internationally recognised research who wish to consolidate and expand this work &#8211; up to \u00a37 million funding will be awarded for a 4 year period starting 1 April 2017<\/li>\n<li>\n<abbr title=\"National Institute for Health Research\">NIHR<\/abbr> global health research groups: existing specialist academic groups who wish to expand into the field of global health, especially in areas where there is a shortage of research &#8211; awards of up to \u00a32 million over 3 years are available<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Minister for Public Health and Innovation Nicola Blackwood said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We want to support other nations across the world with our gold standard science and research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">These funds will allow our universities to continue to make great strides in research excellence.
