{"id":76343,"date":"2016-11-21T16:56:56","date_gmt":"2016-11-21T16:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=315a377dfb7c7e0072bde56098c4cd0b"},"modified":"2016-11-21T16:56:56","modified_gmt":"2016-11-21T16:56:56","slug":"government-response-funding-for-age-related-macular-degeneration-research-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=76343","title":{"rendered":"Government response: Funding for age-related macular degeneration research campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The Macular Society, the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss, has published a <a rel=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macularsociety.org\/cure\">report, Collaborating to find a cure<\/a>, recommending a unified approach to age-related macular degeneration (<abbr title=\"age-related macular degeneration\">AMD<\/abbr>) research and a new funding model.<\/p>\n<p>Investment in eye-related research by the <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nihr.ac.uk\/\">National Institute for Health Research (<abbr title=\"National Institute for Health Research\">NIHR<\/abbr>)<\/a> has increased from \u00a37.1 million in the financial year ending 2010 to \u00a318.5 million in the financial year ending 2015 (the latest available figure).<\/p>\n<p>As a major part of its investment in this field, the <abbr title=\"National Institute for Health Research\">NIHR<\/abbr> has recently awarded \u00a319 million over 5 years from April 2017 to the <abbr title=\"National Institute for Health Research\">NIHR<\/abbr> biomedical research centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and University College London.<\/p>\n<p>Other major <abbr title=\"National Institute for Health Research\">NIHR<\/abbr> investment includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a32.2 million trial of stereotactic radiotherapy for wet <abbr title=\"age-related macular degeneration\">AMD<\/abbr>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u00a32.2 million study of early detection of neo-vascular <abbr title=\"age-related macular degeneration\">AMD<\/abbr>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u00a3900,000 study of the efficacy of a telescopic mirror implant for <abbr title=\"age-related macular degeneration\">AMD<\/abbr>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The usual practice of the <abbr title=\"National Institute for Health Research\">NIHR<\/abbr> is not to ring-fence funds for expenditure on particular topics: research proposals in all areas compete for the funding available. The <abbr title=\"National Institute for Health Research\">NIHR<\/abbr> welcomes funding applications for research into any aspect of human health, including <abbr title=\"age-related macular degeneration\">AMD<\/abbr>. These applications are subject to peer review and judged in open competition, with awards being made on the basis of the importance of the topic to patients and health and care services, value for money and scientific quality. In all disease areas, the amount of <abbr title=\"National Institute for Health Research\">NIHR<\/abbr> funding depends on the volume and quality of scientific activity.<\/p>\n<p>The Medical Research Council (<abbr title=\"Medical Research Council\">MRC<\/abbr>) is one of the main agencies through which the government supports medical and clinical research. It is an independent research funding body that receives its grant-in-aid from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. The <abbr title=\"Medical Research Council\">MRC<\/abbr> supports research through a range of grants and personal awards to scientists in universities, medical schools and other research institutes and welcomes investigator-initiated research proposals in all areas of research relevant to human health.
