{"id":76571,"date":"2016-11-29T12:50:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-29T12:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=869ef6f8cb330c814aa9084a8d62028f"},"modified":"2016-11-29T12:50:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-29T12:50:00","slug":"news-story-government-pledges-290-million-boost-for-low-emission-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=76571","title":{"rendered":"News story: Government pledges \u00a3290 million boost for low emission vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Thousands of buses and taxis will be made greener and cleaner after the Transport Secretary confirmed a \u00a3290 million investment to support low emission vehicles today (29 November 2016).<\/p>\n<p>It reiterates the government\u2019s commitment to reduce carbon emissions from transport and is a major step towards our aim for nearly all cars and vans to be zero emission by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Improving air quality is a priority for this government and we are determined to cut emissions. We will invest \u00a3150 million in cleaner buses and taxis, which will include putting new, less polluting buses on the road as well as retrofitting engines to reduce nitrogen oxide (<abbr title=\"nitrogen oxides\">NO<\/abbr>\u2093) emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The government has also pledged \u00a380 million to improve charging infrastructure for electric vehicle owners. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/government-grants-for-low-emission-vehicles#workplace-charging-scheme\">Workplace Charging Scheme<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Workplace Charging Scheme\">WCS<\/abbr>) is now open for applications.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a3290 million funding will be invested in a number of projects, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a3150 million for cleaner buses and taxis will provide better journeys and help tackle air quality challenges in our towns and cities<\/li>\n<li>\u00a380 million to improve electric vehicle charging infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>\u00a320 million for an Advanced Renewable Fuel Demonstration Competition\n<ul>\n<li>this will provide grant funding, matched by the private sector, to build demonstration-scale advanced renewable fuel plants in the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>\n<\/li>\n<li>this will target the decarbonisation of lorries and planes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A further \u00a3100 million will support our plans to develop and test <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/driverless-vehicles-connected-and-autonomous-technologies\">connected and driverless vehicle technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are absolutely determined to reduce carbon emissions from transport as part of our ongoing commitment to tackle climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This government is committed to improving air quality and reducing pollution in towns and cities, which is essential for people\u2019s health and the environment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">We are already making headway through our investment in low emission vehicles, greener public transport and walking and cycling, as well as grants for innovative advanced biofuels projects.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Poppy Welch, Head of Go Ultra Low, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The \u00a380 million investment in charging infrastructure is vital as growth in the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr> electric car market continues to accelerate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">This is fantastic news for motorists and the continuation of incentives for plug-in vehicles through company tax and salary sacrifice schemes will give thousands more people the option of choosing the very lowest emitting cars and allow more businesses to benefit from adding electric vehicles to their fleets.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"further-information\">Further information<\/h2>\n<p>Retrofitting refers to all or part of an engine being modified to reduce <abbr title=\"nitrogen oxides\">NO<\/abbr>\u2093 emissions.
