{"id":77252,"date":"2016-12-14T10:29:38","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T10:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=2402ed2b0ca5e451cacca0bac9b0ff2c"},"modified":"2016-12-14T10:29:38","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T10:29:38","slug":"news-story-seeking-innovation-for-nuclear-decommissioning-funding-available","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=77252","title":{"rendered":"News story: Seeking innovation for nuclear decommissioning: funding available"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/nuclear-decommissioning-authority\">Nuclear Decommissioning Authority<\/a> (NDA), <a rel=\"external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sellafieldsites.com\/\">Sellafield Ltd<\/a> and Innovate UK are to invest up to \u00a33 million in projects that will integrate and demonstrate flexible innovative technologies for the nuclear decommissioning sector.<\/p>\n<p>Decommissioning and site remediation will have increased priority at Sellafield Ltd over the next five years as reprocessing ceases.<\/p>\n<p>The estimated cost of decommissioning the site is \u00a385 billion, and innovation has a significant role to play in enabling safer, faster and cheaper solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Projects should integrate technologies into a single platform, or a small number of platforms, and aim to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>minimise human intervention<\/li>\n<li>increase productivity<\/li>\n<li>optimise waste treatment, packing and routing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples of technologies that could be part of projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>robotics and autonomous systems<\/li>\n<li>sensors and detectors<\/li>\n<li>imaging<\/li>\n<li>artificial intelligence<\/li>\n<li>virtual reality<\/li>\n<li>digital and ICT<\/li>\n<li>big data<\/li>\n<li>modelling and simulation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The funding is under SBRI (the Small Business Research Initiative), and the competition will run in 2 phases.<\/p>\n<p>Phase 1 will be for the production of detailed technology plans and business cases.
