{"id":77259,"date":"2016-12-14T13:48:12","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T13:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?guid=5e0aadd70f064201e52580b891640359"},"modified":"2016-12-14T13:48:12","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T13:48:12","slug":"news-story-new-director-and-hub-chosen-for-the-uks-new-250-million-dementia-research-institute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mostafa.openonline.co.uk\/?p=77259","title":{"rendered":"News story: New director and hub chosen for the UK\u2019s new \u00a3250 million Dementia Research Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<ul>\n<li>University College London chosen to lead a UK-wide effort to treat, care for and prevent dementias<\/li>\n<li>the institute will be led by Professor Bart De Strooper following a competitive international search<\/li>\n<li>the UK Dementia Research Institute is a joint \u00a3250 million investment by government and leading Alzheimer\u2019s charities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The UK\u2019s ambition to stay of the forefront of global medical research took a step forward today (14 December 2016) with the announcement of the director and hub location for the new UK Dementia Research Institute (UK <abbr title=\"Dementia Research Institute\">DRI<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>Building on the UK\u2019s world-renowned research expertise and excellence, Professor De Strooper will lead the UK <abbr title=\"Dementia Research Institute\">DRI<\/abbr> as it takes a cross-discipline approach to pioneer new treatments to tackle dementias &#8211; a group of neurodegenerative disorders which include Alzheimer\u2019s, Parkinson\u2019s, Huntington\u2019s disease and vascular dementia.<\/p>\n<p>A partnership between the government-funded Medical Research Council (<abbr title=\"Medical Research Council\">MRC<\/abbr>), the Alzheimer\u2019s Society and Alzheimer\u2019s Research UK, the hub of the new institute will be based at University College London (<abbr title=\"University College London\">UCL<\/abbr>), surrounded by some of the UK\u2019s leading scientific institutions including the Francis Crick and the Alan Turing Institutes.<\/p>\n<p>Universities and Science Minister Jo Johnson said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased in the heart of London\u2019s knowledge quarter, this new Dementia Research Institute at <abbr title=\"University College London\">UCL<\/abbr> will be the centre of a UK-wide effort to develop new treatments that will improve the lives of millions both here in the UK and around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is another example of the UK\u2019s world-class leadership in global science and research, and the core strengths we will build on through our upcoming Industrial Strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor De Strooper \u2013 who is currently leader of the Laboratory for the Research of Neurodegenerative Diseases at the University of Leuven \u2013 beat strong global competition and brings a wealth of experience to role. People living with dementia and carers formed part of the decision-making process, meeting with the final candidates and contributing their views on who should lead this vital institution.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of his appointment, Professor Bart De Strooper said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted to have been chosen to lead on a world-leading initiative with as much potential as the UK <abbr title=\"Dementia Research Institute\">DRI<\/abbr>. The research landscape in the UK is brimming with talent and opportunity and, thanks to the NHS, research is closely allied to patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK <abbr title=\"Dementia Research Institute\">DRI<\/abbr> will be a multi-centred national institute with the central hub at <abbr title=\"University College London\">UCL<\/abbr> supported by several connecting regional centres across the UK.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University College London\">UCL<\/abbr> President and Provost Professor Michael Arthur said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><abbr title=\"University College London\">UCL<\/abbr> can lay claim to world-leading expertise across the spectrum of dementia research, from genetics to evidence based treatments and support for patients and carers. We have both the ambition and ability to make a difference and meet the challenge of this most pressing of global public health problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Our vision for a <abbr title=\"Dementia Research Institute\">DRI<\/abbr> is a truly national asset that facilitates exchanges of ideas, people and resources between groups, disciplines and centres. A <abbr title=\"University College London\">UCL<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Dementia Research Institute\">DRI<\/abbr> Hub will enable and support all <abbr title=\"Dementia Research Institute\">DRI<\/abbr> centres to deliver on the Prime Minister\u2019s dementia challenge 2020 and internationally on the G7 Dementia Summit Declaration.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Chief Executive of the <abbr title=\"Medical Research Council\">MRC<\/abbr> Professor Sir John Savill said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"last-child\">Dementias research is a very high priority at the <abbr title=\"Medical Research Council\">MRC<\/abbr> and the new Institute will place the UK at the centre of a global ambition to overcome these diseases.
